I took it for 24 months before my bypass. The dose was actually doubled as I was also taking a calcium channel blocker that caused serious side effects (dizziness and nausea). I had no issues with the mononitrate. Have you had a dental check for signs of a gym infection?

Long story I took it for a couple of weeks but it was giving me headaches so I came off it and took nicorandil but this is not as good for my chest pain.was thinking about giving it another go til I read someone had lost four teeth with dry mouth which is one of the side effects.just don’t know what to do now

How do you know if you have dry mouth

Picass profile image

How long did it take for headaches to go

Jasppip profile image
Jasppip in reply toPicass

About 3 weeks I was so tempted to stop taking them coz the headaches were unbearable but the cardiologist did say it would only last a few weeks so I'm glad I perservered

I stopped because of the headaches but it helped my chest better than what I am on now so I am thinking of going back on them.it was the dizziness as well

My dose has just been changed from 10mg to 60mg due to severe angina attack. I feel as if I have a permanent vice around my head but have not really noticed my mouth being any drier but then I do drink water all day (and night). If you don't like to drink water then try just rinsing your mouth out with it regularly. Haven't noticed any difference in teeth either. If you speak to your pharmacist they can tell you if it's a common side effect.

Hi, I have been on it for a couple of years now, I did get the bad headaches but they stopped after a couple of weeks. But my teeth are getting loose, I had one taken out and don’t think it will be long before another one comes out.

I was put on ranexa two weeks ago and it’s really making my mouth dry. Through the night is worse,

Hope you get sorted out quickly

I was on Ranexa for six months; lower legs swole up and I felt generally miserable; read up on ranexa online and nobody could explain what it does or how it does it..., told my doc I wanted off...., it's a useless waste of time, money and whatever else can be wasted in a person's life.

Hi, I've taken it for the past year. Quite low dosage, but yes I get a dry mouth. No tooth loss yet. Clare

What dose are you on? Does the thought of tooth loss worry you?

clarehealsworldwide profile image

I'm on 20mg twice a day.... 6 hours between first & second dose. Toothache from an old problem sometimes bothers me still, but I've no loose teeth. Good luck. Clare

Very interesting. I cannot find any reference to a dry mouth in the Uk Patient Information leaflet (PIL). However a quick search of US PILs mentions dry mouth as a possible side effect.

You must discuss with your GP or the specialist who prescribed the medicine.

Don’t suppose you know anything about nicorandil.that is what I have been prescribed insteead but I think it says it can cause ulcers

Easier said than done it was prescribed by the consultant and I never get to see him again I will have to ask cardiac nurse.do you take it..?

Hi

I`ve been on 120mg Isosorbide and 60mg Nicorandil daily for about 5 years now, the only side effect I can remember is an initial headache to the Nicorandil. Just a thought, having read your posts maybe you should spend less time worrying about the possible side effects of the drugs and more time concentrating on the benefits of them and trying to improve your health in other ways.

That is very harsh

I come on here for help and support if I am worried about something I am entitiled to ask a question

Yes your right you are entitled to ask the question, given that then respondents are entitled to give the answer as they see it.

It seems to be a trend on this site at the moment for a lot of bemoaning about the drugs prescribed, my view is quite simple and realistic balance the benefits of taking the drug (a longer life expectancy) or the side effects (a headache or a dry mouth) if the side effects are more of a concern to you then stop taking the drug as nobody is forcing you to take them.

You are right and I realise I have to take the drugs but I am entitled to find the best quality of life I can

rakeman profile image

Of course you are right to ask questions about alternative drugs to make your quality of life better, we all suffer from some sort of side effects from the drugs we take, I have read about others reactions on this web page and found I have had similar reactions to them, I have mentioned this to my Dr and found alternatives to make my quality of life much better, do not be put off by one or two individuals, most on here are there to help and give support.

I see your a relative newbie to the forum perhaps when you` ve had 2 MI`s, a cardiac arrest, ischaemic stroke and suffer with Refractory angina and survived for 5 years past your sell by date then your discourteous comments on other people`s views and experience may be of some value

Picass profile image
Picass in reply to

I hope never to be as discourteous as you have been I hope always to be helpful.

rakeman profile image
rakeman in reply to

Not discourteous at all, just trying to give confidence to another member on this site where I thought your comments were very harsh, I am afraid you do not have to have suffered cardiac problems for over five years to pass a comment to assist someone

in reply torakeman

Your right you don`t, but it is surely more beneficial if you have some experience of the disease and drugs rather than a qualified Dr Google.

Just to clarify had my first MI and cardiac arrest 8 years ago when I was only expected to survive for about 3 years.

The points I stated were not intended to be harsh but to be realistic as I have found them.

rakeman profile image
rakeman in reply to

I joined this forum FOR SUPPORT and to GIVE SUPPORT to others in the same predicament, I do not use Dr Google, If I have offended you in any way please accept my apology.

in reply torakeman

Thank you for your response, while I agree it is up to the individual to choose their treatment plan. The point I have difficulty with is when support is offered to individuals who are in a anxious and distressed frame of mind to make decisions that could be detrimental to their health.

In my experience and research the first line of drug therapy offered is done so because those individual drugs are the best at their jobs, they may need some tweaking here and there. So to advocate and support any change to a second class therapy with unknown long term consequences just because of some unpleasant side effects (most of which will dissipate over time) I find difficult to comprehend or support.

The above is my personal opinion and is not meant as an attack on you or any other individual and if it reads as being discourteous that`s unfortunate but I will not apologise for my views.

Stay well to you all

Steve

You are a bitter, miserable person who has had an life experience that seems to have effected you. You need to pray to the good lord to restore so kindness.

in reply toPinkiep

It is clear from your post that you are of limited intellectual ability, having to resort to personal insults. What happened to me an my past is really none of your dammed business.

So to make my point easier for you to understand try this scenario.

You or a member of your family has contracted a illness, you are told that the first line of treatment is going to make your hair fall out, you are going to be violently sick every morning and generally feel awful but you will have a 90% chance of surviving the next 5 years or the second course of treatment will only cause mild side effects but you will only have a 70% chance of surviving 5 years.

You make the choice.

As you have deemed it necessary to bring religion into this if your lord was as good as you think then we wouldn`t be having this discourse as there would be lack of any sick people in the world.

Not sure what you found discourteous in my reply to you it was just a realistic perspective.

There is absolutely nothing wrong in seeing if people are experiencing the same symptoms you are. In trying to have some control over your health it is best to get as much information as you can in order for you to make an informed decision. It is up to each individual to decide what they can and can't tolerate. Other people's opinions on what another individual should or should not do is irrelevant.

Carry on gathering as much information as you can and ignore those who offer unhelpful advice. Only you can choose what you will/will not put up with in YOUR life, in All aspects of life.

Keep on seeking support. There will be others who gain comfort from you asking questions that they may not feel confident enough to ask.
