Pain in the buttock .................

It may sound funny but believe me it isn't, 4 months ago I had HA and have been on 80mg atorvastatin which I take at night, my health has been really good since, but this last 6/7 weeks the pain in my left buttock and down my left leg has been horrendous, cant sit, can't drive etc but walking around Im fine. I have been using Voltarol and solpadine max ( highest otc codine) but to no avail. Last week I saw my GP who told me it could be bursitis, but today at cardio rehab one of the nurses said it could be my statins? I have another GP appointment on Thursday as the pain is unbearable, so should I mention statins to him or is it more likely to be bursitis??? The pain is driving me nuts and it lasts all day and wakes me during the night :( unless someone out there has a way I can mange it?

Help...thanks

Linda guise. My husband suffered really bad pains throughout his body when taking 80 mg of Atorvastatin. It affected his liver and stopped taking the tablets until his liver function returned to normal, hospital gave him ultrasounds to make sure there was no other damage. Eventually he had to start taking them again and only takes 10mg at night, he still has some pain but they have ruled out statins. Hope you get sorted out quickly.

Thanks Bazmack - I have just had 2 LFT tests, and both showed OK (Im diabetic) apart form this pain I'm feel really good, in fact far better than I did pre heart attack. I can do the cardio rehab no problem, the pain doesn't affect me if I'm moving, its only when seated?? At first I panicked it might be some sort of blood clot but again rehab nurses ruled that out saying there would be swelling and heat, there's nothing, just the damn pain :(

Sounds like sciatica

I was told my back pain and pain down leg was sciatica and was given Pregablin which I decided not to take as side effects would be worse than the pain I was getting. This descision probably saved my life ,as on returning from a 5 week holiday in Spain a month ago,I was taken seriously ill in France with severe back pain and sickness. It turned out I had an infected stone in my kidney and sepsis.I very nearly didnt make it.After 3 weeks in a French hospital I was allowed home(towing caravan and traveling on boat via Caen Portsmouth) and had to present myself at my local A&E as soon as I arrived back in uk.Well now I still have the kidney stone which will be operated on in mid September as have to get sepsis under controll first.all seems to be going the right way at moment ,but I dread to think what would have happened to me if I had taken the Pregablin as they are supposed to be very effective against the pain.I had a H.A. in February so this added to the problems ,but all seemed to be well when I had all the cardiac tests. What I really am trying to say is try to get an accurate diagnosis for your back pain ,and look at other possibilitis.

Thankyou - yes that's my underlying worry that it's something more serious, in myself I feel good, it's the pain that grinds me down, last GP visit said not sciatica but bursitis, so I really don't know! Appreciate the advice!

Yoga and similar is the best thing I’ve ever done for my back. I go to classes in my local gym, I’m the youngest and only male in the class, but the benefits far outweigh the feeling of anxiety I used to get going to them. I have had lots of accidents in my past, one of them broke or fractured my back and I’m left with it slowly deteriorating. Try the classes...... 2 months and you will only need the odd Paracetamol or ibuprofen xx

Yes I have been told yoga is very good and not just helps with relaxation but with also joint flexibility, will look into classes once my cardio rehab comes to an end. Thanks for advice

I only suggested sciatica because my husband has been told that is what he has got. It has now lasted more than five weeks and he has been taking Oromorph with little effect. The GP has now booked him for a MRI scan because he is in so much pain.

I hope you manage to get to the cause of your pain.

I have had severe sciatica that after a year was diagnosed as prolapsed discs (L4 & L5). In addition I had bad muscle pain with Simvastatin (then changed to Atorvastatin). The pain was totally different. Your description sounds like sciatica to me. Physiotherapy can help with this. Bursitis is a possibility. A friend got this in his hip and knee after forgetting his age. Time and rest seem the answer for him.

Linda, I had a HA 16 months ago, I was prescribed 80 mg of Statin, made me ill, blood test revealed my liver function was really poor, after my liver recovered I was put on 10 mg of statin, a month later, the same result, so that's the end of statins for me.

I suggest that you may have Sciatica which is exceedingly painful, tell your Doctor.

Hi just a quick message to say I was on Atorvastatin post HA and ended up being virtually unable to walk due to leg and lower back pain. I mentioned it to my GP who immediately moved me on to Rosuvastatin. It took a couple of months but am now pain free

I went to surgery this morning on an emergency appointment, pain had me up all night :( mentioned to GP about statins who said they had never heard of that and diagnosed sciatica without even examining me, prescribed co codamol 30/500. Taken 2 and feel zoned out but pain eased. Got heart failure clinic on 25th so will discuss there with nurse. appreciate advice. Thanks

Am shocked to be honest by your GPs response if you Google Atorvastatin and muscle pain you will get tons of Gita including the NHS own website. I personally wouldn't be taking cocodamol unless I really needed them. As there are other great statins out there that is the road I would be going down. One thing my GP said is prescribing guidelines say Atorvastatin due to cost issues. Luckily my GP is a bit of a maverick and is very much about what is right for you not what the budget says. Message me anytime you want x
