As part of my blog following my heart attack in March I have written a post about the importance of nutrition as part of rehabilitation, the dichotomy of hospital food and why I may be close to buying a bulk load of cheese cloth.
Hi Graham. Delightful read. I’m one of those really weird Vegan (no pointy ears though - stupid play on Star Trek!) yup agree with the hospital thing. To be fair I was offered a vegan meal whilst in one of the hospitals that I have attended and it ended up being more non-specific than your meat pie. Microwave Mush sums it up! Another day another hospital and when I asked for a vegan meal was asked if that was the same as Halal? More or less the same just different ways of dicing the carrot says I! So now when admitted I take a pack of oats with me just in case. Then plead with friends and family to raid the food cupboard but always revert to just drinking water without the accompanying dry bread. Thanks for sharing. Zena
Really interesting blog. York hospital have improved enormously in the last 7 years since my heart attack and it's quite easy to get hold of fruit instead of crispst o go with the teatime sandwich now
I've spent some time in the Brompton. Food is yummy, much better than other hospitals I've been in. It is all freshly made, good soup, proper porridge and good vegetarian. Almost worth being poorly.
I spent 9 nights in Wexham Park when I was first diagnosed after being packed off to A&E by my surgery. No beds in Cardiology so was in a random women’s ward until a bed was available.
The food was bordering on inedible. Breakfast was the best with porridge and adding fruit my husband bought in for me. Lunch was a sandwich c/o DH as was supper, which was chicken or prawn salad. Lunch and supper from the hospital was usually stuffy, tasteless sludge that smelt revolting, or fatty pies and chips, none of which could be remotely thought of as low calorie / healthy / ideal for anyone with a heart condition.
Microwave mush is a pretty good description for much of it!
Wexham Park. My local hospital, or it would have been had I been organised enough to have my heart attack locally, rather than 200 miles away from home. Sounds like the experience would have been the same. Thanks so much for reading it.
