“Fitness for Surgery” OR Pre-Op

Various soothsayers have been telling me that if your surgery does not occur within a couple of months of your “Fitness for Surgery” you have to go through it all again. Different tests stay in date for different periods. Typically, an angiogram in valid for 12 months, an echocardiogram for six months, etc. I will not quote a long list as the lifetime of a test may vary between NHS Trusts, and the tests done will vary with your condition. Five years ago I had surgery delayed for three months and all that was repeated was BMI, various blood tests and chest X-ray. The latter may only have been done as the delay occurred over the winter months and I had a chesty cough at one stage. If in doubt check with your team not Dr Google or know-it-alls!

I was told that my pre-op tests for an AVR, consisting of x-ray, ecg and blood tests would last for three months and Zeif I didn’t have my op by then I would have to have them redone, nothing else though. As it was after the second op cancellation it took me just over the three months, but they said that was fine.
