Following my previous post re antidepressants given to hubby to try to get his appetite back. I posted that these drugs had made him like a zombie, I stopped giving him these as he was really spaced out. GP phoned back after 71/2 hours and agreed that hubby was having a bad reaction to drug. He wasn’t improving yesterday so I called an ambulance. The hospital did loads of tests including several for Addison’s disease. It turns out that hubby had had a stroke. More tests to find out if the arteries in his neck need a sweep, they say the meds he is taking following HA have helped him, ie aspirin and statins, the drugs have kept his blood thin which is good. There was no signs a stroke had occurred and they will do MRI to try and find out when the stroke happened. He is on a gastro intestinal ward as they want to find out why he is not eating, has lost loads of weight and has constant upset stomachs. He had a colonoscopy a few months ago and apart from a polyp everything was fine. He is due to have another which won’t please him. I feel putting this into a post has helped me cope.

Hi, so sorry to hear that your husband has had a stroke,I hope the Drs can find out why he is not eating.

All this must be so worrying for you but at least now he is in hospital and will get investigations to find out what is going on.

Best wishes

Annette

My father had a similar stomach issue when he was about 50. All the tests and numerous barium meals found nothing. It eventually improved after over six months and all they could suggest that either he had some sort of reaction to a chemical that had got into the food chain, either intended or accidental, or that he had picked up an obscure bug from somewhere. Not particularly helpful I know but hopefully they will find something definitive so that they can start treatment.

Some SSRI anti-depressants can actually cause digestive problems so if he was prescribed these it could have made the issue worse.

Hopefully a stay in hospital will get to the bottom of his problems.

MichaelJH- Thank you for your post. Hubby has just been discharged from hospital, they have stopped doing tests over the Christmas period. He is very quiet, possibly worrying about another silent stroke. I will have a chat with him in the morning. The doc said at 10 this morning he could go home and we left just after 5. Have a lovely Christmas and a healthy New Year.

Oh let's hope they get to the bottom of it soon. Was he on anti depressants for long? Sertraline can make you feel drowsy, but they only come in 50g I break mine in half so only 25mg so this suits me. However, stomach problems can be caused by aspirin bisoporol and ace inhibitor like Ramipril as can statins. I cannot aspirin at all it made my tummy bloated tender and gurgling I couldn't eat and felt Nauseous all the time. Cardiologist took me of all drugs and reintroduced them to work out which was causing my tummy issues it was aspirin and bisoporol so no longer take them. Statins are also a problem they can make you feel groggy too.

Two bells.hubby only took 1 15mg antidepressant. They say he had a rare reaction to it. His stomach problems began in October whilst on a short break in Wales. The weight lose was following HA as he was overweight but now because of stomach problem, lose of appetite and taste problems he can’t stop losing weight. He does take aspirin, bisporolol , statin and candersartan. He was on this cocktail for a year and they have cut down the beta blocker to 1.25mg. He does not enjoy food and have found small snacks suit him better. Being told he has had a stroke in the past has knocked him back as he had sign of this. He has admitted he thinks he is depressed and we are going back to GP and hospital after Christmas. Anyway have a good Christmas and a healthy new tear.
