Genitle ulçers 2 the size of fifty pence peices and they are on the side so all movement will make it bleed. Arrrrghh.. my eyes feel like they are bruised at the back of the eye. Numbness in the end of my fingers, mental headaches I'm having trouble with my toilet needs. I'm having no joy with painkillers. So of a nitetime I will reach for the alcohol it's a complete nitemare... But heads hi we will soon be all good..x

Hi Pbearman,

I can certainly relate to painful genital ulcers. I have had them for many yrs. Are you on any treatment? Also, do you have any medication, such as ointment which you can apply directly to your ulcers? I really am fairly new here, as far as posting and coming on this group. I am sorry if you have mentioned this before. My initial response is to ask if you have contacted your medical provider? Can you share more of your history, if you don't mind? I know how miserable the symptoms can be. You only mentioned pain meds. Have you been diagnosed? As someone who has tried alcohol to relieve the pain, misery and overall difficulty of feeling so bad and having pain. I found out the hard way that alcohol will do you a lot more harm than good. It is a depressant (I had severe depression as a result of illness and isolation) and it also causes inflammation. It interupts normal sleep patterns (not that we can sleep to well anyway) It of course can cause an array of other issues ..like fatty liver, elevated liver enzymes, dependence and mess your liver up. Cirrhosis. I am not saying that this is you. I am saying that I drank heavily for 11 years because it helped

(I thought) my sleep, my pain, my coping, my lonliness. By the time I wanted to stop I had to be detoxed at a hospital for 6 days. I had even been a Certified Subtance Abuse Counselor for years prior to my diagnosis. I had 10 + years of not drinking. I was diagnosed with Behçet's in 1992. Back then and before it took 16 yrs for me to get the proper diagnosis.

I had been able to work until age 36. I had flares but I would always be able to go back to work. I am not anti-drinking for most people. I do think that it will more than likely exacerbate your symptoms and possibly cause harm. I was on an antidepressant Rx when I went in to hospital for detox in 2007. I learned that the medication Cymbalta I had been on for a year could cause liver damage and in some cases liver failure which required a liver transplant in some patients. I was fortunate that my liver returned to normal size and function. If you haven't spoken to your consultant or nurse in regard to the problems you are currently having, especially any eye issues. I apologize if you are aware of this already. But as I am not familiar with you, your situation or meds. It seems to me that you should call your dr, if you haven't already. I am sorry that you are suffering with so much now. I might have some suggestions you can do at home for some relief. I hope you will share more, if so inclined. Most of us who have had Behçet's for a while can offer some at home remedies and help for symptoms.

I hope you will be feeling better.

Cindy

Good morning, I have not had the genital ulcers, but my oral ulcers and symptoms seem to flare with alcohol. Do you notice any decrease in symptoms if you're not drinking? Truth be told, even though I've stopped drinking, my symptoms (oral ulcers especially) have been far too frequent. Sorry to hear that you are in such pain :-(
