Hi

A simple blood test will reveal vitamin D levels in your blood/body.

Most northern European citizens suffer from low vitamin D levels. Vitamin D is produced by the body naturally, mostly through exposure to sunlight.

The following symptoms can be linked to low vitamin D, tiredness, feeling low, lack of energy etc. Increasing evidence is showing vitamin D may help in the treatment of chronic conditions by reducing some of the possible symptoms.

Just to add I've recently been taking vitamin D (recommended by Behcet's clinic). On a personal level I have found it amazing. Feel happier, have more energy, and sleeping better. I have been surprised how such a small change can make such a big difference. Although this is just my personal opinion.

If you have a blood test and find vitamin D levels are low. Likely to have a "booster" injection, then just take a daily vitamin D supplement tablet

Thank you for your reply really appreciated. I have arranged to have a blood test so hopefully will find out shortly.

I was treated for this a while back, I had osteomalacia where quite literally your bones hurt. I was also quite down and very tired. It needs treating with supplements on prescription as the over the counter calcium and vit d are not strong enough and the excess calcium is not good for you if you don't need it. You can't recuperate vit d from diet alone, and to ensure enough is produced to see you through winter you need approx 20 - 30 minutes daily sun exposure to face and forearms (average) from April to October. Weather and increased use of sun blocks are our biggest risks and Moslem women who cover Wher bodies are also very likely to develop this.

Thank you. I tell my doctors it feels like I get severe shooting pains in my bones. They just laugh at me. I am convinced it is my bones -- mainly in my thighs and lower right leg.

I have now been taking my vitamin D supplement for 3 weeks. My bone pain has disappeared and the trouble that I had been having with my teeth has nearly gone. Feel so much better in such a short time. Will take supplements for 2 months have a month off then will have another blood test to see if my levels have increased. If not I will do the same again and see where we go. Really has made such a difference to how I feel. xx

yes my son is 23 and has been vitiamin deficient for 10 years. has been on and off vitimin d 50,000 iu per week with no change in blood work or how he feels. he is usually deficient in vitiamin c and a. it is hard to get the vitiamins in when you cant eat etc. he has taken the vitamin d with calcium and without. a lot of people that take vitimin d with calcium (which i think you are suposed to) it makes them sick. I keep giving him the vitimin d cause insurance pays for it and he is deficient. there are two vitiamin d test one of his is low and one is high (which noone can explain as possible) but he doesnt absorb the vitimins.

Another way to get vitamin D is Cod Liver Oil either liquid or capsules. I have been told that with the inflammation that I have from the BD this is sucking up the vitamin D so it may work don't know. Will have another blood test in April a month after finishing my tables will see how things go. I seem to be lucky as felt no sickness. Biddy xx
