Dear del6330,

It's understandable that you are frightened, but there really isn't any need to be. What aspect is it that worries you most? Having to talk about things, being examined/having tests or what the results may show?

The doctors and nurses in Sexual Health / GUM clinics are very used to people being anxious. They are also very used to talking to people about very personal and embarrassing issues. They have seen and heard it all before! Nothing will shock them and no one will judge you.

The examination (if you need one) and the tests are all very quick. Some results may be available whilst you wait (depending on your symptoms).

All STIs are treatable. The common ones are curable, usually with simple antibiotics.

Everything in the clinic is completely confidential. The staff will not discuss what you have told them with anyone else, partners/parents/GP etc.

Most people who go for the first time say how much better it was than they expected and feel very reassured. We all go to the dentist every year for a check-up and take our cars to the garage for an MOT. A visit to the clinic is just a normal part of staying healthy.

If there are specific concerns or questions please do ask.

Kind regards.

I can confirm I visited a GUM clinic recently and they were brilliant. I was really really nervous but they put me totally at ease and were fantastic.

Glad to hear you have had a positive experience. For anyone else worrying about going to a Sexual Health Clinic (they don't need to!) this video shows what an average checkup appointment is like....

Aww! There's no reason to be scared!!

These people are the experts at this stuff. They have seen it ALL before!!! They are not judging, and their job is to help you and give you as much information as they can.

Okay, the talking about your sex life can be awkward.

Alright, the examination is always weird. No one enjoys having a randomer poking around in their junk. But at the same time, it's a really good habit to get into. Going to the GUM clinic every six months even when you're sexually inactive means that by the time you are, or if you're ever worried you do have an infection, you'll already know where you're going and what's happening.

I have a sister who was terrified to go for the first time. We're both at uni, so I couldn't go with her. What we did was book an appointment at the same time on the same day, so that she was reassured to know that I was going through the same thing at the same time. I called her straight afterwards and she said they'd been lovely.

The GUM clinic are the BEST people to talk to about sex, contraception, disease, and even relationships, because they see it every day. They're interested in your health and your welfare. They will be super nice.

I hope this helped to reassure you.
