The pill after my period?

I’m on the combined pill microgynon and I was wondering if you still need to take it after you’ve had your period, if you’re not still having sex.

Like I had sex, I started the pill and I’ve had my period. Do I still need to take the pill if I’ve not had sex since?

I am sorry I am confused by what you are asking . Do you have an ongoing need for contraception , or bleeding control, or PMS symptoms for which you are on the combined pill ?

That’s okay! I’m on the combined pill as a form of contraception. I’m asking that if I’ve had sex, I’ve taken the pills and had my period, do I still need to take the pills if I’ve not had sex since having my period.

So if you took the pills , then had your pill free week, that is a withdrawal bleed ( not your real period ) You are still covered for contraception during that time. Once that week is over, if you do not resume taking pills , then you may ovulate and be at risk of pregnancy.

So if you are not continuing to have sex, then you may stop taking the pills, and your previous sexual activity is covered. However if you are going to have further sexual activity, then stay on the pills. If you restart at some point in the future ( like a new relationship ) you have to take pills for a week before you are covered , unless its day 1-5 in your cycle.

I hope that covers it :-)

Thank you so much for your help! I was really worried I’d have to just keep taking them regardless, so I appreciate this :)

Hi I was on microgynon for 10 years solid.

It's a combined pill which is a little stronger than the mini pill. Hence why you have a 7 day break at the end of the pack of 21 days you then start retaking a new pack of microgynon after 7 free days after the last pack finishes. This will give you a period you may not bleed for as long as

usual or for the whole 7 days compared to what your period were like starting the pill.

You should start a new pack of

microgynon after 7 days break of not taking the pill where you should see a period. If you don't continue then even if you don't have sex again this next week or so then you will not be protected. You are however still protected against pregnancy in the 7 days at the end of the pack where you have ypur period. But it can't be used as a method of contraception if you just take it before during times of sexual activity. And it is advised by doctors to take it first thing on the morning or the same tome each day.

There should be a leaflet pamphlet inside the box of tablets explaining all above.

I would consultant your doctor if you have any concerns.
