I currently have the Nexplanon implant and I’ve had it in for about a year now and it isn’t really working for me.
I’m looking into getting either one of the coils I just want to get some advice and see if it’s worked well for some other people.
My periods are really regular and quite heavy so I don’t know if that helps, I also get a lot of headaches and since having the implant I’ve had quite bad skin.
Any help or advice would be really appreciated.

Hi. I had a copper coil (non hormonal) for 5 years but am no longer on any contraception. When my coil was changed after 5 years I had all sorts of issues. I then went on Depo which made me gain weight and affected my mood terribly so I was sterilised. No hormones forever but my periods still haven't returned from my last depo. It's now 14 months, but that's another story!
I didn't have any issues with the copper coil, I had it 2012-17. I was glad to be off hormones. A copper coil can make your periods heavier and more painful and I was warned of this when I had it fitted. My periods were never very heavy anyway whether I was on contraception or not. They were slightly more painful with my coil than when I was on the pill but manageable.
If you have heavy or painful periods you may be better with the Mirena hormonal coil as it can lighten or stop your periods. The hormonal effects are meant to be less than the implant. I would go and see your GP or family planning clinic for some advice on both type of coil to see which is the best for you.
One thing I will say is that the copper coil can make your periods heavier and more painful so if this is a concern, the hormonal one is your best bet. The majority of women find their period stops when on a hormonal IUS - I was one of those people. I suffer from endometriosis and getting a three year coil was like getting my life back. It was, hands down, the best decision I ever made
