In my case, insertion of an IUD by the usual means proved difficult (my cervix being very small and my vagina very long), so it was done, whilst I was also undergoing explorations of my womb, under anaesthetic. When the IUD expired, some 3 years ago, my GP suggested I just leave it in. I am concerned that this is not in fact a safe solution indefinitely, and that my (irregular) periods produce very dark, almost black 'blood'. Should I get checked out?
