I have mild autism and have struggled with it my whole life. I’m 29, have never had a job (although I do volunteer work) and I’m afraid that I’ve left it too late to look for employment. I want to be braver, more independent and meet more people my age.

Finding a Job
Is training in the computer field or engineering possible? I teach students that are mildly autistic who seem to work out very well in these fields, but you have to be good at mathematics. I can't tell you more than that because I have merely observed their behavior and have never asked them if they are autistic or have Aspergers. I don't live in the UK and don't know who could advise you or test your skills, so you'll have to find that out from someone else. Good luck!
You definitely haven't left it too late
Can I offer one bit of advice please always tell people that you have mild autism
I can't tell you how much I wish you well
Go for it you will have a nice surprise
It's never ever too late
I was going to look for a job after I left college but my dad became ill and he passed away. I live with my mum and my brother who has severe autism so I felt it was responsibly to stay home while she went to work so I could help look after my brother and keep the house in order. That was 9 years ago. Last year I realised that I’m almost 30 and I’ve never had a paid job and been too scared to socialise. At the beginning of this year I started applying for jobs so I’m hoping and praying that I hear something soon but it’s making me feel really low some days.
It can be really hard to find a place where you feel safe and feel like you "fit". I've moved houses and changed jobs so many times, it's always been scary. You've definitely not left it too late - there's nothing wrong with taking the time to find what you're passionate about or work on new skills happy to chat if you ever want to ask questions on being an autistic person at work, but we're all different so it's okay if you find some things harder or easier
Hi Do done research on national and local charities. There are schemes to help people to get into work and gain experience. The ones which fall within local authorities may be the most useful. Do also go into the job centre, start small maybe a part time job just to build up cv. Don’t underplay your volunteering experience you can amplify skills from that just need help developing your cv.
Also consider distance learning depending on your ambition for employment to look at upskilling. A fresh certificate/degree may override earlier years. For interviews you will need to explain the gaps so rehearse what you will say that is truthful but positive. The fact that your volunteering has given you confidence to start is good.
Hello, Im 22 and in a similar boat although i have ‘moderate’ autism i suppose?
i’ve never held a job, i’ve been unable to complete proper education bar a Level 2 course. So i know how you feel. (at this point i dont think i’ll ever get a job :/)
you could look for a apprentices, or as around the place you volunteer? Do you have a support coach or something?
its never too late there will be a job that suits you that you’re able to do. you can always go back to education and see.
I do relate to how you feel and i think a lot of us autistics know it too.
be easy on yourself, it will take time but you’re doing the best you can!!
