My feet and hands are always cold, even with socks and slippers on :( but am not sure if it is Ataxia related or not

Hi Razzy

Sadly, it is an ataxia related problem.

Sounds familier. Sometimes exercise or movement of the foot muscles helps, but doing it isn't as easy as it sounds

Cold feet is definitely a problem with Ataxia.

Faux fur, boot style slippers are the answer. I normally get mine from Sainsbury's, but I have just been to M & S, where I bought a pair for home a slightly posher pair to wear as boots when I go out. If you can afford then Ugg boots are great.

They really work for me. Good luck : )

Hello,

I have a circulation booster and it sometimes works for me. I have tried all socks, boots and wooly slippers nothing helps except a good old fashion hot water bottle.

Yes I do get cold feet and cold hands but I am not sure this has anything to do with my Ataxia I am however having sight problems in that my eyes seem to have a short delay

in focusing Has anyone else got sight problems ?

My eyes flicker which is part of my FA but this isn't affecting my sight at the moment however, i do wear glasses. Some days the flickering is worse so it does take me a little longer to focus.

i'm no expert but it's probably down to poor blood circulation.

Its definitely to do with my Ataxia.

Find that thick, thermal socks work for me......have to wear them in bed as well, lol

Also have a hot water bottle to keeop my feet warm in bed.

I wear glasses and have problems with one eye, though hospital put this down to a tear in the back of my eye!

Yes. I experience a delay in focusing although it occurs when I'm tired ..... well what used to be tiredness but is now exhaustion. Furthermore on those occasions particularly the most distant area in my field of vision, whether its a row of shops or a line of hills, scrolls upwards but bewilderingly never seems to reach the top of my frame of vision. Does anyone else experience this phenomenon.

Hi Helen92

A similar question has been asked in the past with some very good answers that you may find helpful. If you click on 'cold feet' or 'cold hands' in the Tags section you should be directed to this.

I do, but I believe it's related to my weight loss.

I find that I blame everything on my ataxia, when it's often not.

Problem is that there isn't too much help/advice available out there is there, hence forums like this where we try and understand it from others experiences and that can sometimes cloud our judgements, it's a difficult one

Justsheepskin sell full sheepskin boots for men and women. I have found them excellent for keeping my feet evenly warm. The boots are outdoor and they have indoor slipper boots too.

I get cold toes, cold fingers, a cold nose and a cold palate which I have been told are all nerve injury problems. I find this very frustrating at times but these pains happen daily for short periods of time.

Keeping evenly warm from the start of the day helps greatly.

Good luck.

Yes. I belive it is a feature of SCA and maybe of all neurological conditions. I wear socks in bed 11 months of th te year and gloves too if it is really cold. I think the secret is not to get cold in the first place and sometimes it seems too warm outside to expect to get cold .

but there doesknt seem to be much relationship to the way you feel and the temperature. Also I have been a lot better by going swimming several times a week

Good luck

I get very cold hands and feet as well but recently my nose (just as Lanarkin explains) gets really cold. I have to cup my hands over my mouth and nose then breathe hot air out of my mouth onto my nose!

Yes I get cold feet and hands. I've found several things that help. Lanarkian says getting warm at the start of the day helps and I agree with this. Double lined socks are great too - fishing socks I think they are called - I got mine from Aldi. My heated pad a Dreamland is really good for warming your back and shoulders- from Argos. If you want really warm slippers that are neat and snug then Morland are super - they've just brought out some with PVC soles.

We've tried heat holders socks too for my daughter, she wears hers in bed as well. I've just bought her some slipper boots (a size or two too big so she can wear the heat holders as well) hopefully they will do the trick! Does anyone know of anyone with FA that is around 11 years old?
