Has anyone with Ataxia and tinnitus ever uses a deaf aid? I am going deaf ( so my wife says!!) and I wondered if a deaf aid could help with balance as well as deafness

🙂 I’ve seen other comments relating to tinnitus …but so far no-one has mentioned deafness or a hearing aid.
I notice ‘something’ myself..an occasional noise I can’t put my finger on..
But..as a separate issue..
In the past, I’ve used ear plugs to help cope with sensory issues. I was in a busy shopping mall, and the noise/bright lights/general busyness was overwhelming. I remembered I had earplugs in my bag..I used them and actually got relief 🙂
I have lately. It makes everything louder, but has no effect on tinnitus so far. I'm told it will change if I keep using it, we shale see ! It actualy complicates things when I'm outside, noise is irritatingly too loud.
Hi, I have FA, am 42 and my tinnitus is loud.
I use a white noise generator to help with this. Sounds weird but please Google sound generators and learn about them because it really does help with tinnitus. Like taking sound out of my head and putting it in the room. It's a relief.
I have just been diagnosed as partially deaf due to degeneration of the nerve signals between my ears and my brain. So a hearing test/review may be helpful.
I have an appointment in January to be fitted with a hearing aid to provide permanent white noise and amplification to help me.
I'm a wheelchair user so I am not sure how this affects my balance, but I absolutely agree that it would.
Definitely worth trying. Good luck, hope this helps.

Hi Ted
Just out of interest my mother who is 82, suffers from autosominal deafness (she has Ataxia and has passed the faulty gene down to me. I can't comment on balance etc as she is bedbound and also refuses to wear a hearing aid.
Best of luck to you.
Make sure you have both ears with a hearing aid!
