Coffee. Is Coffee bad for you, I drink it thinking it will give me more energy, perhaps I’m wrong
Coffee: Coffee. Is Coffee bad for you, I drink it... - Ataxia UK
Coffee
I drink 1-2 cups per day, morning and sometimes early afternoon. I have been told to keep it to a minimum as caffeine can disrupt the bladder (something already struggling due to SCA ataxia).
Though, yes it will give you more energy (more of a kick, not a prolonged effect). I'm not sure if it is a better thing to do, but I tend to rely on sugary things (e.g. chocolate or fruit) to give me an energy kick when needed (e.g. before having to do some work, or before driving).
Also, coffee (or caffeine) later on in the day will disrupt how well you sleep that night - this can have a negative effect on ataxia the next day.
Sugar is not a good idea. Scientists are now recognising that sugar kills the brain. If you desperately need chocolate, then eat very dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa. It has a reduced sugar content. I eat Lindt chocolate with 85% cocoa and have got used to the taste. I enjoy it now.
🙂 I enjoy the occasional coffee..everything in moderation 😉
I always thought coffee was good for people! If I didn’t have my coffee, and caffeine, I would, at times, get more tired, and less alert! Being alert has saved me from falling asleep at the wheel, when I used to work a job 7 days a week, 12 hours a day! So, on the contrary, people have had their lives, be less dangerous, when coffee, with caffeine, has helped people stay alert!
I agree 👍 I have 2 mugs a day for energy and hope for the best. X
My wife gives me the kick I need to keep moving, more effective than any coffee 😂
I now drink decaf coffee and tea, it has helped with my muscle twitches and tremors. It is probably due to methylglyoxal, it is in coffee, tea, chocolate and manuka honey. In PNKD patients methylglyoxal is raised, so maybe it is in Ataxia, who knows.Suzie
There is no research to show that coffee will help with SCA, but some studies have shown that 50-100g of seaweed sugar per day can slow down the progression of the disease, so maybe you could try adding seaweed sugar to your coffee, it might help you. Here is the link to the study. Feel free to discuss. I'm actually trying it and at least the drink still tastes good.empr.com/home/news/drugs-in...
I take CO Q 10 daily to give me more energy.Know it works for me as I did not take it prior to having a blood test and the difference was really noticeable.
Haven't drunk coffee for many years so goodness knows what it would do to my digestive system now!
