Dignity in Death

I have become a member of Dignity in Death. This group is close to getting approval from Government to pass a law to allow assisted death. I believe that if you have no life and want to choose to die earlier it should be allowed, we put our pets down rather than make them suffer, why not people?….

my family used to think i was insane when i said things like that.. until my father entered the final stages of parkinson's. he died at the beginning of the year and by the time he died, he wasn't himself. i thought of him as the shell of my father.

i've euthanised two cats. the first had a brain tumour, went deaf and was hysterical whenever i left the room. the second had a quick-moving intestinal cancer. though his doc offered to put him on pain management, i thought about all the love and laughter he gave me (he was crazy in a good way) and i just couldn't let him suffer like that. the day before the first cat died, he crawled on my belly and smacked his sibling for spending too much time with me (he was very possessive). the day the second cat died, he didn't go full crazy-cat freak out, but he squeaked to his heart's content with crazy eyes.

my point is, they were still themselves when they died in my arms and they didn't suffer needlessly b/c of some jump upped religiosity.

since my dad died, my mum keeps telling me not to hook her up to anything. my sister called recently and said the same.

if my cats can be treated more humanely than my father (or me), there's a problem.

Good evening Caroline, I’m in agreement with you, there was something on the news a couple of days ago about assisted dying under consideration by the Government….. considering the subject matter….. I hope you, your sister and your respective families are all ok

Much love❤️

I agree with you about this and pleased it is being discussed in parliament. Also with choice not to resuscitate.

I completely agree. I believe in California we have something similar and I can’t think of the name of it at the moment

i got really excited when a buddy of mine in the states told me there is a law in favour, until i read about it. basically, the guidelines are so strict, hardly anyone would qualify for medically assisted suicide in CA and other states. i suppose it's at least a start.😐

I became a member of Dignity in Dying 2 or 3 years ago. I have twice written to my MP (Theresa May) about the issue and have been very disappointed by her response. I had thought that being a Christian she would have wanted to end suffering. There is nowhere in the bible that says it is wrong to end someone’s life to relieve suffering.

There are many places in the world where the law has been changed to relieve those who wish to die on their own terms and I sincerely hope that when the issue comes before parliament again in the near future that MPs will have the courage to support it.

My Dutch brother had Euthanasia in Holland. It is not as simple as people always say. He needed 2 doctors (one had to be his personal GP) plus the ok from a judge. He was dying from a very aggressive lung cancer and in severe pain. Painkillers gave him bad hallucination so did not want to take them. A friend from London had the same reaction.

My Dutch father wanted the same (before my brother) when he was dying but was refused because he had not registered with them before this request. He died anyway and not how he wanted to go.

They always talk about doctors doing no harm but letting people live till the bitter end and ignoring their wishes, is also harmful and so are hospices were they take care of ones physical needs but what about the mind?.

my mum and i discussed that. in many ways, technological and scientific advances are a wonderful thing. i jokingly told her that 100 years ago, i'd already be dead (from coeliac if nothing else), but today all this science keeps people going and going. it's a mixed bag.
