A matter of weeks. I'm having a real positive experience.

Fatigue may change if you adopt a more Mediterranean diet...less fat

KiwiBob that's quite a long time, it just shows how the specialists centres are required through out the UK. I will wait and see after Christmas what happens. Happy Christmas to everyone xxx

It doesn’t matter how long you have to wait because there is no cure anyway and seeing somebody at an ataxia centre is just a check up.

Helping with the symptoms is mainly done by physio therapists.

To be referred to one of those you only need a referral from any medical professional to a physio therapist that knows something about Ataxia. The several Ataxia centres or Ataxia UK should have names of them. Once you have a name, any GP can refer you.

The speed of getting a referral also seems to be connected to the NHS trust that you belong too.

Klazien, thanks my gp was going to refer me to physio, however non of them know about Ataxia, they only give you a sheet showing what to do in general exercises. Therefore I requested Sheffield. I had the brochure sent to my GP surgery as none there were aware of this condition. It's all about money our practice, large with GPS coming and going, new ones etc.

To be honest I have found out more with ataxia UK and this forum.

Just plodding on like everyone else, thanks xx

It is really important to see a specialist, Sheffield is excellent, they really know their business and what medication might help and what will not. I was made very unwell with one medication optimistically prescribed by a neurologist who didn't know what I had at my local hospital. The advice and support has been excellent. They have also answered my GP's questions regarding medication as not all are good with ataxia. My experience is positive, there have been suggestions and input that has helped hugely. I think it took me about 6 months but, I was stable to a point.

Hi Pacitto - I was fortunate having a GP who already knew about Sheffield Ataxia Centre. I was referred in July and got an appointment for the following January. Well worth the wait - very pleased with the support I'm getting. Kind regards, Pammyann
