Cognitive impairment

My husband has had c a for 13 years. At first it was progressing very slowly but recently his walking and balance have got quite bad. He also has problems with hallucinations and with working out who I am. He cannot retain any sort of timetable and worries about what will happen. Does anyone know if this is typical of c a or could he be developing dementia. Help please.

I've had CA for 20+ years but fortunately can still remember things,so I think it may be DEMENTIA..

Thank you. We saw the doctor at the dementia centre today and he seems to think it is mild cognitive impairment. With CA and very poor eyesight, it is difficult to know what affects what.

I am sure you would have tested his B12 ... was the result over 500 to prevent cognitive decline ? I am fortunate to live in Crete so can self-inject. I am not saying it is a cure but it can help. 😊 It works on the nervous system as well as other issues ...

Thank you. I will certainly look into that.

Read Dr schmahmann’s work on Cerebellar Cognitive Affective Disorder - the issues you describe are most likely a direct result of the Ataxia, but Drs will probably want to do a work up to rule any other causes out xx

More reading for me to do but I will look into it. There is so little support for this condition. You are just left to get on with it. Fortunately we belong to a local support group who are very helpful.

My consultant told me that if there was no cognitive impairment after a few years, it wouldn't develop later as my ataxia progressed, so I don't think your husband's cognitive issues are related to his ataxia.

Hi that's great you are sticking through the good and worst woth your husband, yes it is I have C A the memories go you tend to collapse you can't think. It's like you you bit trapped in a body that's comatose, only that body appears to function without you. I'm not better bit better, I have a vagus nerve stimulator. With this device I walk well I think we'll my mood is great I'm happy, at times I don't feel good but I go back to ok. Also my weight stays normal. Keep being strong he loves you for it he just doesn't know because he is not his self.
