A friend has mentioned getting a disabled parking badge. If anyone has got one, at what stage we’re your symptoms when you applied? x
Blue badge: A friend has mentioned getting a... - Ataxia UK
Blue badge
Hi EmWakie
I'm having to do a mobility assessment on the 15th for mine. I use a walking stick so either they don't know a hell of a lot about Ataxia or SPG7 or they don't believe me. But i will let you know how i get on. Definitely go for it
EmWakie...... if you have a good GP, tell him/her you are applying for a blue badge, and that the county council will be contacting them about your mobility problems....... I never did and assessment for my blue badge, my GPs letter was enough, but the process may have changed since I’m on my third badge and they cost £10.00, but last three years!
Good luck! 😀👍
At the start and was issued immediately. It’s a godsend without doubt.
Soon I will have my fifth blue badge. A letter from my GP at the time was enough.I did not even have Ataxia at that time but a very bad back and could not walk far. It seems that was enough. But it is possible they gave them too easily at that time. it is fantastic but it does not help much in London and the disabled parking places are almost always full.
Hi EmWalkie
I have a blue badge!(2nd one now) when I was assessed I had difficulty in walking and because it was obvious I did not have to prove it.
You might need to prod the Blue badge issuer. Often the issuer contacts GP and other health professionals on your behalf, the issuer knows referrers will paint you in a favourable light, ie need Blue badge.
Once issued bear in mind not all car parking is free. South Lakeland charge everyone, whereas neighbouring councils have no charge for Blue badge displayers.
I am SCA2 and can only walk short distances, only aided, either my husband or a walker...I can see where are you coming from? My bro is less disabled than me, his head suffers from dizzy spells and keeps dragging his left leg (sca2)...But eventually he will apply. Much milder than mine. You can visibly see my altered walking, shorter stride, more of a shuffle, wider gait..to balance. But go for it...It greatly enhanced and simplified my life, whether in hospital, or generally. Keep on abiding the rules, which you have to request from the issuing body and you'll be fine.
