I came across an excellent paper today that has a summary of most of the main treatments being explored for SCAs. I found the conclusion at the end to be most heartening:
" RNA targeting therapies will be the solution for the near future. Exciting recent results from clinical trials in various neurodegenerative diseases have shown that RNA targeting compounds such as AONs can safely and effectively enter the cells of the CNS without inducing strong side effects.
The polyQ SCAs are a group of devastating progressive disease where historically, only symptomatic treatment has been available. With research progress in recent years, however, there is great promise that a therapy to delay disease progression or even to halt disease onset can be achieved."
