Current state of SCA treatments. A new summary.

I came across an excellent paper today that has a summary of most of the main treatments being explored for SCAs. I found the conclusion at the end to be most heartening:

" RNA targeting therapies will be the solution for the near future. Exciting recent results from clinical trials in various neurodegenerative diseases have shown that RNA targeting compounds such as AONs can safely and effectively enter the cells of the CNS without inducing strong side effects.

The polyQ SCAs are a group of devastating progressive disease where historically, only symptomatic treatment has been available. With research progress in recent years, however, there is great promise that a therapy to delay disease progression or even to halt disease onset can be achieved."

And the paper:

P.S. If anyone here is active on LivingWithAtaxia, I would encourage you to share this post there as well. Sadly I have again been banned from that site for "prescribing" my regimen.

Joe,

Thanks for the article, it has load of information. One of the thing that I came across was discussion of Lithium Chloride and it's positive impact on SCA 1. So was wondering if you had any thoughts about Lithium and have you tried it?

Thanks everyone.

M- I have not tried lithium yet as I haven't actually researched it. I was under the impression that it had been tried with no success, but now I see I was mistaken so I will need to do some homework. As a slight aside I am also reading up on vinpocetine. It has some evidence in humans with Parkinson's but not much related to ataxia, but like lithium it research in animals showing it has potential to help cellular processes in the brain.

Thanks for the share , after browsing through I could only see it covering a handful of the more recognised Sca types but does anyone know if sca10 is in this research ?
