Does anyone know if the legs go completely or do they stay wobbly. It's so scary to know I may need help even around the home
Legs: Does anyone know if the legs go completely... - Ataxia UK
Legs
Hi. I can't say for sure yet. I have just ordered my first electric wheelchair to use outside but at the moment my legs are strong and stable enough to support me indoors, as long as I hold onto something. What I can say is that as your condition progresses you learn to adapt and what once seemed scary becomes more bearable. For example, when my ataxia started the idea of ever having to use a wheelchair indoors or outdoors filled me with horror but now I am looking forward to using one and being a lot more mobile outdoors as I have spent the last 5 years struggling with a walker and only being able to walk short distances. 2 years ago the muscles in my legs and back were so weak that I could hardly remain on my feet indoors but during the last 2 years I have been doing a lot of exercises to strengthen my legs and lower back and this has definitely helped me to preserve mobility indoors.
Hi, yes it is very scary, not knowing what's round the corner, your words are most encouraging thank you. When I was first diagnosed I thought it was the end.
it depends, partially on if your ataxia is progressive in itself. I will say conan's right about the exercises. it makes a difference. not only is leg strength important, but it feels good to do something proactive to fight back. i'll give you some advice I struggle to take (lol): focus on the day instead of worrying about the future. it can vary day to day and how you feel will change.
stay strong!
Definitely, do as much exercise as you can, even if it doesn't seem like much, do something small every day. Have you been referred to a physio?
