DAT Scan

My husband now has a letter for us to make an appointment for a DAT Scan . I understand it’s to see if he has Parkinson’s Disease ? Does anyone have an experience of this ? Or can anyone explain what other tests are often used to find out the cause of CA ? What sort of time does it take to get results ? I would be very grateful for any feed back xx

I have CA and Parkinson's. MRI was done for CA, primarily. CAT scans have been done for both. EEG has been done. Brain scans with contrast and angioplasty, because of suspected arterial involvement in CA was done. I was hospitalized for a week when many of the tests were done, and then the CA was diagnosed within about a 2 month time period, at the end of my hospitalization. PD took several years, checking history, records, and symptoms progressing. A trial run of Sinemet was diagnostic.

I've only had MRI's and an EEG. I have cerebellar ataxia due to Niemann Pick C1 disease. ;o)

I had a DAT scan several years ago,but don't really remember what the result was! I have had SCA 6 for over 18 years and know it is inherited.Let us know how your husband gets on.Best wishes to you both.

I had a DAT scan last month, they gave me an injection to stop the thyroid obsorbing the iodine solution, I had to wait an hour, then I had the iodine injected. I then had to wait for 3 hours for it to be obsorbed and the had the scan. It took just over a week to get the results back. Hope this helps and good luck.

Thank you for replying , do you mind me asking was it successful ? Did it give you any answers ? I’m not prying and a yes or no would be helpful .

I have just looked up my notes (should have done this before I made my previous comment) I had exactly the same test as 1940girl, requested by my neurologist for my right leg stiffness, the result was 'normal uptake',whatever that means!.Shall be pleased to hear how your husband gets on.

Hi, yes I was tested for Parkinson’s as my legs are quite jerky when I lift my heel off the floor, luckily the scan came back as normal which means I don’t have it. I was told they test for the level of dopamine in the brain. This scan wasn’t done in a “tunnel”, there are just two plates one above and one below you which rotate around your head, but they are very close to your face, mine took about 45 mins. Good luck to your husband,

Regards Heather
