Today's interesting molecule. Taurine.

So I spent a couple days researching this molecule and finally just now I began to find some truly interesting links:

-

Creatine-supplemented diet extends Purkinje cell survival in spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 transgenic mice but does not prevent the ataxic phenotype.

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/112...

Way back in 2001 researchers fed mice taurine, and it improved their symptoms. Wouldn't it have been swell if someone tried it in humans? Once again a promising molecule is totally ignored because there is no money to be had, at least that is my opinion on the subject. Anyways, that paper is the one that really got my attention, but the overall look at taurine is that of an interesting molecule with a host of potential benefits:

First the general discussions:

lifeextension.com/Magazine/...

livestrong.com/article/1467...

articles.mercola.com/vitami...

-

-

and then some relevant scientific papers:

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/163...

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/229...

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/295...

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/260...

nature.com/articles/s41419-...

-

and then studies in humans not necessarily related to neurology:

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/223...

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/192...

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/289...

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/295...

As always - never try something based on anonymous internet comments without first fully discussing the issue with your doctor.

Hi Lit - Sorry for the slow reply. Work and all that :) So that means it didn't cure the mice it just made their symptoms better. Part of my theory on attacking our illness is to push on as many parts of the causes of the symptoms as possible. Anti-oxidants may be able to help the body repair damaged processes in our cellular lives so adding anti-oxidants to the list of supplements MAYBE adds a tiny helper to the ataxic body.
