Hey guys,

I have SCA 1 and my speech has been impacting more progressively than other symptoms. Anyone know of any medicine or supplement that may help with Dysarthria - Speech issues?

Thanks,

MP

I have SCA1 too but my biggest problem is shaking at the moment (we are all so different!).

My speech has been a problem and I had a really good speech-therapist for a while. She encouraged me to sing along (not nice for rest of family!) and talk to radio. She also encouraged me use thickener in my drinks (get off GP now). I prefer ‘Thick and Easy’ but you can have ‘Resource’. Both websites very good.

Oh when my speech was playing-up I discovered a long extended ‘argh' helped.

Hope helps x

This sounds so simple l thought Iwould give it a go. The first few attempts came out as a croaky noise but after many attempts it did improve! Thanks.

There is a voice warm up video on YouTube. The lady starts off by humming. I was amazed to find that I couldn't do this either but I can now( not very tunefully) xx

Hi. I was diagnosed with SCA2 5 years ago and have had speech problems all along. I had speech therapy initially - 4 years ago - and it helped. But my speech has got progressively worse. There is no medecine available I’m afraid. Not that I know about anyway. I still work - for the time being anyway - and have learnt to adapt my day to my deteriorating condition. I hold meetings in the mornings and ask everyone at work not to telephone me after 2pm as I may not be able to make much sense after this. Luckily everyone at work are very supportive and understand. Hope this helps.

I Have a speech problem when faced with contention of any degree. Or am tired, or in a noisy environment, which leads me to find seclusion and rest so I can recover.

I'm exactly the same! If I'm nervous or tired it gets worse. I sound drunk, and often have to deny this even though I gave up booze several years ago! Obviously this makes me more nervous and so the merry-go-round continues. I too find seclusion, or just give up joining in any conversation. 'Friends' tend to disappear, indeed people just stop talking to me - just talk over/around me. Lonely.

Hi valrosie!

This may sound odd. Politics today are extremely depressing and have been so since 2002, since when the level of depressing material has been increased year on year. TV is the main carrier of and deliverer of this despondency. I decided on a change, less TV and news, more c.d's and films. My speech has improved, I am feeling better and now have to wander around to find my sticks. ;-))
