🤔 VAT relief for disabled people

If you’re disabled or have a long-term illness, you will not be charged VAT on products designed or adapted for your own personal or domestic use. Also, you will not be charged VAT on:

the installation and any extra work needed as part of this

repairs or maintenance

spare parts or accessories

The product and your disability have to qualify.

You will find that if you are purchasing on-line from a company that is well organised, it will provide a Self Assessment form in purchasing process. You just complete the form and you will not be charged VAT on your purchase. If you go in store, then the same process will take place.

Happy shopping.

Kind regards.

You’ll need to be a little careful and not do what I initially did

I initially had my en suite bathroom adapted and bought items myself and from B&Q (like a flat shower tray, grab rails etc) and employed a plumber to install.

This however was regarded as a diy project by HMRC and not eligible for VAT relief. You also can’t claim retrospectively for a refund. The form must be completed in advance of supplier invoicing since they too claim the money back from HMRC via their VAT returns to HMRC - smaller suppliers sometimes don’t know what do do so they’ll have to read the HMRC guidance

When I could afford to do my main bathroom I went to a supplier who I told in advance I was entitled to VAT relief and got them to both supply and fit items. I filled out the form and they invoiced me without VAT saving me 20% of the cost

This does not just apply to bathrooms - any specific item you need due to a disability.

Neither you or the supplier are paying VAT - HMRC are paying it

Good luck

Thank you for your good advice

An example of VAT relief was when I purchased a mobility scooter online. As I have a neurological condition I was entitled to purchase the scooter at cost price excluding VAT.
