Hearing Problems

I have Ataxia SCA7 - I have a lot of disabilities caused through this, however, what I am finding now is there is a delay between me hearing something, and when I recognise what has been said. This causes some problems as I don't immediately hear what people are saying to me. I didn't expect this.

Has anybody else experienced it? And if so, have they found a way to overcome it?

Thanks, Patricia

😏 I’ve experienced something similar, and wonder if it’s connected to Cognition. It can take me longer these days to ‘digest’ information and give a logical reply. If I’m under pressure and become stressed, the situation becomes much worse and panic can set in. So far, I haven’t found a solution. One thing I am sure of, I have no problems setting thoughts down in a post or email but, putting them into words in a conversation is something else entirely 🙂xB

i an no doctor but I find alot of the problems to do with ataxia are caused by a build of air in your system so anything like YOGA will help.

Unfortunately I am in a wheelchair but a new club I go to is doing tai chi which I find very beneficial.

I would be interested in more information - you are the only person I have come across that also has SCA7. I do not use facebook but are you okay for an email?

Thanks, Patricia

hi Patricia, I have a genetic cerebellum ataxia, unknown gene at the moment. I too have this problem, esp when I'm tired. Unfortunately I don't have a solution to this particular problem except rest. I go to bed every afternoon for 2 hours. I eat well and recently have started taking vit b12 once a month on prescription. I'm sure the vit b12 is making a slight difference. I also take a mushroom supplement called AHCC, this isn't directly for my ataxia, but helps with all the indirect health problems that I now have.

good luck

love

I'm interested in what you say - what is b12 and how do you find it helps?

I also have this problem. I was told it us due to a delay in my processing of information. Unfortunately I walk slow, I talk slow and apparently I understand slow.

I usually try and have a one on one conversation in a quite area and frequently ask people to repeat the information.

Hi Pat

I have a similar problem. I am always asking my wife, Jan, to repeat herself but by the time she replies I have often understood what she said first time. Also she used to complain that the tv was too loud so I bought an amplifier, not a hearing aid as they are much more expensive. I can now hear the tv with the sound turned down but I cannot understand what is being said when they talk too fast or mumble.

I can still understand newsreaders as they speak very clearly.

Thanks for replying. I wonder whether amplification would help me.

An amplifier makes things louder and therefore easier to hear but does not solve the problem of understanding what was said, especially if they speak too fast. I have bought a 'beurer' amplifier from amazon and, with Duracell batteries, they last about 2 weeks. ~ Bob
