Bike recommendations

Hi

It's about time I got back on a bike as I love the freedom of it.

I can no longer manage a conventional bike so have my eye on a recumbent bike.

I don't want a handcycle as legs still have good power in them still.

Question is where can I try these? And where to buy any recommendations? They seem quite pricey.

I live in Exeter and can't drive.

Up in till 3 yrs ago I was cycling every day. Only my double vision, fatigue and uncoordinated arms and core stopped me (made signalling impossible)

Hi Sam

I'm not sure from your post whether you mean an exercise bike or an outdoor one.

I have had a recumbent exercise bike for 7 years and I use it 4x50 mins per week. It's hard work but I love it and it has really improved not just leg strength, but overall fitness and cardio health. The great thing is I can go cycling at home when it's dark, cold and wet outside.

I have a V-fit bike which cost about £130 7 years ago. I have no idea what the current price is.

The model I have is very basic with several items on the console: speed, distance etc It is also supposed to measure heart rate but I wear a chest strap which wifi's to a wrist display, which is VERY accurate (about £40 Amazon). It has 8 gears and adjustable length and height. I now only use gears 7 & 8.

My advice is: don't pay for all the fancy gadgets you don't need (like calorie counter etc). Just get what you need.

Recumbent bikes are great for cardio, because you can concentrate on getting to your aerobic range (mine is 123-133 bpm) and stay there for the session. My resting heart rate is down to 47.

It's very enjoyable, but lying back doesn't mean take it easy! It's hard work but fun and you should be sweating profusely after about 5 mins (make sure you warm up well before you get on the bike).

As for trying one out, try your local council fitness centre/pool, they should have them there and let you try one. However, apart from V-fit, I have no experience of any other makes/models.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I'm looking for an outdoor bike which is making searching for a recumbent a bit harder. I can find them on tinterweb but trying them is a bit harder!

I would be interested how you get on Sam, I use an electric powerchair myself for mobility.

Hi, you’re right about pricey, but Da Vinci and others were quite happy to visit with the equipment rather than having to visit them so that might help.

I have a semi-recumbent trike from Mission Cycles, and I love it.
