Sleep and tiredness

Hi. Over the last few months I have found I am weary and tired all the time. My sleep patterns are haywire, some days sleeping for a couple of hours and other days up to 12 hours. I have tried to get into a routine but doesnt seem to work. Sleeping tablets are not an option as have tried before and after a couple of days they stop working. Could this be connected to my Ataxia? Anyone experienced similar? and how do you manage it?

Hi Capricorn9157,

I don't know if this is the same kind of thing you are experiencing or not, but yes I do get tired and/or fatigued quite a lot during the course of a day. I can sit down and the next thing I'm sleeping (it may only be for a few minutes or it may be for an hour or so). My usual night time habits see me sitting up until late - I am what is known as a 'night owl', but the last few months have seen me going to bed sometimes at 8.30pm - 10.30pm. The only medication I take is for blood pressure and cholesterol, and as I have been taking this medication for years I am more than confident that these are not the problem. I read somewhere that ataxia makes you tired, and the more busy I am then the more tired I get. I have SCA, but as to what number it is I have no idea, perhaps Australians don't use numbers because I was only given a diagnosis of Spinal Cerebella Ataxia. Hope this is of some help to you. Keep happy. LadynTramp.

Hi. Sounds similar to me. Sometimes in bed early and other times awake all night. But I can fall asleep on the sofa any time during the day for a few minutes or up to a couple of hours. One day I will find myself on a train the other end of the country after napping...lol.

Im writing this to you both, yes I get tired a lot, I try to have a siesta. for about 2hrs a day. I have been known to sleep all day. I have had Spinocerebellar ataxia for 30yrs number unknown. We are a mystery. I see a professor of neurology but he specialises in Ataxia. I am also in a genome prroject givig consent for my DNA which they have. It won't benefit me but will benefit someone in the future. It is based in Newcastle. Lately I have fallen a lot. In Feb I fell, and fractured my pelvis! I had to sit all day, until April very frustrating & boring. Now my shoulder/arm are really painful, sometimes I cried with pain, my fingers tingle. U forgot to mention I have Dysonia too, that's muscle deteriorating.

Keep smiling, Be careful

I have not had the erratic nights but I always try to have 1-2 hrs nap during the day and if I have a busy day I need a recovery, rest day.

My physio says we need more cos use a lot of energy trying to appear normal. Hopefully sort soon - try staying-up late?

Good luck x

Hi Capricorn 9157, I am tired all the time and never feel like I have any energy. I am always up late as I do not sleep well. I am now trying different teas like moringa dawn, Bora Bora, organic rooibos, which are suppose to be good for us. Thought I would try some natural things instead of tablets
