Hi new on here, I have cerebellar ataxia & have for the past 4 years but for the past 2 weeks have been having really bad dizziness, could this be associated with ataxia? I've never had or experienced this before & it's starting to drive me insane!

Dear Legs-alive

Thank you for your question. I am sorry you have developed this problem.

People with ataxia can experience dizziness, but there are many other causes of dizziness that can affect anyone, ataxia or no ataxia, most of which are treatable. My advice would be to see your GP to have the cause of your dizziness investigated so that hopefully it can be treated..

Best wishes

Harriet

you could have a middle ear infection that is causing this so get along to the doctor! however I have cerebellar ataxia and lose my balance sometimes you really need to be aware all the time - no sudden turns , cannot walk backwards and various other things set me off- cannot walk in the dark- am all over the place so need a light if i get up in a night. hopefully this will pass ! all the best Sylviaxx

Dear Legs-alive, I was diagnosed with ataxia twelve years ago and occasionally have very mild dizziness. Yes, dizziness/vertigo can be a symptom of ataxia, but can be caused by other things also. I agree with what others have said. See your GP or neurologist to find out specific cause, as yours sounds severe! My best to you..., ;o)

Hi, I have sensory gait ataxia and have dizziness and take sea sick pills for it. I also have BPPV . This can make it worse, maybe you have BPPV too. Maybe look it up and see if it applies to you.

Greetings from the U.S.

hi,

I get periods of dizziness which my neurologist said are a form of migraine. He prescribed me zolmitriptan to take when it starts and usually that and a good sleep does the trick. But before I would suffer for weeks on end with very disabling dizziness. It would drive me mad - I really couldn't do anything.

I seem to suffer from them less anyway now as I have learnt when I need to rest. I have a two hour siesta every day now.

I have sca unknown type which the Drs say is from a recessive gene.

I think you should go see your Dr and prob neurologist too

good luck 🍀

Alison
