I'm sooo rude ~ apparently...

The neurologist took great delight in telling my partner that the part of my brain "that deals with emotion and etiquette" is dead. Well of course I tuned out. Apparently I am very black and white, to the point of...? Sorry if I've ever hurt anyone's feelings on here. Has anyone else got this drama as well?

Hi joolzzz🙂

That remark was insensitive wasn't it🙄 I'm so sorry. I've heard terminology that's upset me in the past too, not relating to ataxia but still...

Sometimes facts just trip off professionals tongues, without thought of whether they're speaking to an associate or a patient.

Personally , these days most things are 'black and white' for me. Hopefully, I don't cause offence either🤔 xBeryl

If you think your neurologist was less than sensitive try what my one said when I was first diagnosed - 'well, it won't kill you' - which may be true that the actual ataxia won't but not what I wanted to hear. Luckily for me he is retiring this year so I shan't have to see him again. His bedside manner was awful and he never made me feel that he could offer any help. My GP referred me to the John Radcliffe Hospital and I also saw a neuro-physio and speech therapist because I asked, it was never offered by the consultant.

And these people are the so-called professionals?! If they had to try and put up with the problems that we all have then maybe they would think a bit differently.

Hi Joolz,

On Headway, we describe this as your' filter not working properly' and is often associated with frontal lobe damage as well as other areas. People can come across as rather blunt and upfront - it is an accepted trait of such damage. However, knowing your recent posts and having just skipped around some of your older ones I am not seeing anything to suggest that you have this problem - I see considered, polite, empathetic responses.

Judging by the clinical way in which the information was delivered to you, I would have to question if neuro's filter is less than ideal ! So here is a person, insensitively telling you that you are insensitive , ha ! If your emotional side was not working, would you have recognised that their 'off the cuff' comment was brutally blunt and felt upset by it ? I can come across as quite blunt at times and I have no emotional changes with my condition - it's just the no nonsense way I am : ) Perhaps if the neuro believes your filter is not working they have made the mistake of thinking you do not have feelings : (

Sorry you have had to deal with this situation,

Take care, Angela x
