I'm on my second course of Pulmonary Rehab in the last two years whit and I love it :) Do give it a try. You'll not be asked to do more than you are capable of and - at the end of the six week course - you will be amazed at how much more you can do !

I don't think there is a real set format for each individual course, but the gist of it is ....

a few minutes warm up then a set amount of different exercises, none of them vigorous or too difficult. Ours are leg exercises (and you can do them either sitting down or standing up). At the end of each exercise we have to mark on a list how out of breath we are (using the Borg scale).

Once the exercises are done, there is usually a 'lecture' (not really, it's just an informal talk) on either medication, the use of inhalers, a talk from a psychologist, the importance of a healthy diet and also a chat with a pharmacist. Next week on our course we're having a chat with a respiratory consultant who just happens to be the consultant taking care of me.

It's a great opportunity to get out and meet some new friends who understand what difficulties we have. A bit like being on here really, but in 'real life'.

In two years time, I'll be putting my name forward for another one !!

Keep on keeping on whit ........

P.S. If you want a full list of the exercises we do at Rehab, just send me a message and let you have one :)

Hi Whit

It varies from rehab to rehab I think but mine was 6 minute walking between cones; exercise bike; wall push ups; stand to sit; resistance bands (arms and legs); all sound rotten when breathing rubbish but as almost everyone on the site will tell you, it actually works. It strengthens upper body chest and leg muscles so you don't use as much of your precious oxygen on working those muscles. There's no denying the exercises can be tough but together with the different information provided at rehab - invaluable! Also excercising with others who are in the same boat is better (they don't try to talk to you in the middle of it!). Hope this helps in some small way - go for it !

Hiya linsabout

My group was a right mixed bunch, COPD, asthma, one guy with one lung, IPF, Bronchiectasis, but all with dodgy lungs, bless. Age range 49 - 86. The 6 minute walk is not as bad as you think, somehow being inside and on the level is much easier and you can stop when or if you feel you must and rest.

is every one else watching you do this 6 min thing?

Not when you do the first and last assessment but in all honesty, for the rest of the rehabs everyone is too busy trying to breathe to bother watching you, other than smile in sympathy and put thumbs up!

Go for it whitt beleive me you won't regret it. I'm on week 5. (How this has flown) and really enjoyed it. This is the first time in my life I have done any exercise except many years ago at school. If you want the schedule of what we do in Derbyshire message me and i'll scan the sheet and send it to you. Please for your healths sake don't miss this chance, it's only the fear of the unknown that is making you question rehab just as it did with me and possibly a few others on here.

Linsabout, don't worry about anyone watching you luv, just remember the people there are also in a very simular condition healthwise, some better and some maybe a lot worse. There is no one more conscious of people watching them than me, just bite the bullet and do it. Its not a competition you go at your own pace do what you are comfortable with and stop when you need to. By the second week i'll bet you love going. I did.

Hi whit. I am just waiting for my start date on a rehab course, and I can't wait to get started and everyone on here who has done it says how much it helps, try it you never will know if you can do it till you try.

Do it no matter how shy you are to start with. Everyone else is in the same boat. After week 4 you will notice an improvement and by the end of the course you will be feeling 99.9% better and wondering what all the fuss was about. You'll have to do so gentle exercises at home, but who cares if you frighten the cat? Very best of luck.

Give it a go and see how you get on would be my advice. So many on here love it and enjoy the benefits so must be worth a go. Having said that, Pete went the other week, after much persuading by me, and was told he was not really suitable but the plus side is, we have a young lady coming here at the end of the month to see what she can do for Pete! Needless to say, I will be keeping a close eye on proceedings! Take care. xxxxx
