pneumonia then xray

hi everyone, I’m new today so forgive me if something like this has been on plenty times before.

A couple of months ago I was diagnosed with bacterial pneumonia, luckily I didn’t need to stay in hospital. I went back for another chest x-ray and the dr has said it hasn’t cleared up as much as was expected so I go for a ct thorax and abdomen with contrast this Wednesday and also referred me to respiratory team on a fast track pathway.

The thing is I feel fine I can run up stairs I have no nagging symptoms and am worried sick can anyone advise me with any of this.

Thank you for taking time to read this .

Hi there, I can understand your concern if you've not had lung issues before. It's really great that they're looking after you and a CT scan will show everything going on in your lungs - way more efficient than x-rays . As for a referral to respiratory department that's great too - in my neck of the woods a referral is like finding a hen's tooth!

Its pretty important to get rid of any lingering infection, left it can leave scarring & continue to multiply and/or develop into something else. Take care of your lungs. Good luck on Wednesday and do let us know how you get on - many of us have been where you are right now so get how scary it can be. P

I had a x Ray 6 weeks after I’d had pneumonia. My respiratory doctor told me exactly where the infection had been and said that x rays lag behind and it’s quite usual for the inflammation to still show up. A CT scan will show up anything that’s going on in your lungs so it’s a good idea to have one. Good luck.

It's all good news Teejay1, you have a ct booked, fast track to respiratory and you don't feel ill. I really wouldn't worry too much, sounds like your doctor is on it. You may need further medication to clear up the infection and think your doctor is making sure it clears. Let us know how you get on. Good luck x

Hi and welcome, it can be scary especially when you feel fine in yourself. I lost my voice for a week and doctors put me on 2ww for cancer when the results came in no cancer but they found emphysema in the top of my lungs but my breathing was good, year later gp gave me a COPD review and told me I didn’t have COPD there was a bit of confusion but then they read the letter from the oncologist and all of a sudden I did have it , apparently they never read it (lol) . My breathing seems ok to me I do struggle with stairs and slopes. It can be hard not to worry when you feel ok in yourself, my emphysema has spread now top, bottom and rear of lungs but I feel no difference . Pulmonary rehab is something to look into, my other condition’s stopped me doing it but I’ve heard it helps and you learn a lot. With having so many scans ( COPD, GORD osteoarthritis) they found enlarged descending aorta so under cardiac clinic and scans with them found another enlargement in my abdominal aorta (under vascular for that). I think because you don’t feel any changes it can be worrying. I’m lucky because I don’t worry ( but that’s a different story), I know it’s hard but try not to worry to much , speak to family, friends and the doctors just to get reassurance. Hopefully you will find something that helps you. Kevin

Aww thank you kev, this forum and peoples replies really has calmed me down a lot and am now feeling more optimistic, I’m glad you feel ok in yourself and not such a worrier I wish sometimes I could be like that but I’m not I’m more pessimistic and go straight to the worst scenario so you can imagine how I was over the weekend. Thank you for replying and you take care of yourself too.

Hi, that’s ok if I can help always happy to answer any questions (if I know the answer). I do find these days I don’t worry about much, my wife worries for us both. She often asks me how I can remain calm like in January my sleep neurologist called me and said I needed to stop taking my medication as it was killing me, I just ok but Lynn panicked a bit it was all good the meds stopped me breathing at night a lot. Now on different pain meds but still under sleep clinic as I have fragmented sleep and PLMD ( limb disorder). Always glad to help where I can , have a good day. Kevin

Welcome to the forum. Long may you remain able to run up stairs. Hope Wednesday brings good news-it sounds as if you have a very thorough set of medics looking after you.

Hi - it sounds like you’ve a good doctor there, keeping track of your lungs and what may or may not be happening. So much better than being forgotten about. Keep up with your exercise and normal living - I’m envious of your ability to run up stairs so well!

Should they turn up something a bit more concerning they’ll have caught it early, when treatment is more likely to clear things up well.

Keep in touch, and ask away if you have any more questions 🤞👍

hi and welcome. It’s good that you’ve been referred to a respiratory clinic to get checked out. My GP wouldn’t refer me but eventually got referred via medical doctor when I went to A&E at the end of November. Appointment is tomorrow with a lung function test today Take care xx
