A couple of weeks ago I wrote saying about my encounter with a wild boar while walking our dogs late in the eveing.

Well, last night we were out around 9.30 and I was about 5/6 yards in front of my wife who was persuading the dogs that we would like to actually complete the walk and go home before it rained. I was quite surprised to see a badger run across the lane in front of me and disappear up a well worn track into the undergrowth.

A few seconds later, my wife caugh up with me and she almost disappeared up the track as the youngest of our dogs went after the scent. Thankfully she was, and always is, on a lead. We have been asked many times by neighbours if they could take her hunting, as it is obvious she is fast and very keen. The answer is always no as at home they live quite happily along with the cats, which we are quite fond of.

We`ve had mini-wire dachs for the last 47 years. I know that for a facat as we bought one for our daughter when she was 3 and she will be 50 this year. We had already several afghan hounds and took them, along with baby in carrycot to our weekly dog training sessions. Once she could walk confidently, she would take out oldest affie into te child handling class. Usually about 5 kids would be there and it was fun for everybody. Our daughter, Lyndsay, became quite good at walking along side our affie, despite being much smaller than the dog.

At the end of year Christmas match night, when dogs competed 2 at a time in a knockout type competition, she was one of the winners in the final. Small girl with big dog against as it happened, a big man, George, with very small dog. George had in is youth been a prize fighter in the clubs round Sheffield, and had been breeding dogs, usually terriers for many years. This particular evening, he was showing a min-pinsher, much to everybody`s amusement. It didn`t take long for the judge to decide that Lyndsay was the better of the two. George took it all in his sytide and duly congratulated her. We asked Lyndsay what she would like for her birthday, and the answer was a sausage dog with a beard. Hence, our start for many years with mini-wire dachs. Brilliant with kids, good fun for everybody. We stopped having affies some time ago when my wife decided that they were too much for taking out on long walks, and we bought our two new minis, who go on oliday with us, except when we go up to the UK.

I started this post to talk about last night`s walk and seem to have forgotten the little bit. After te badger I then spotted in the torchlight the little fellow in the photo. A young spiky toad, at least Mr. Google says it is a spiky toad. Have a good day everybody, Chris.

Sorry, but the toad seems to have hopped up to the top, and spolied the story.

Thank you for sharing your life in France with us. It was a place my husband and I planned to retire to. Unfortunately 3 lung diseases and rheumatoid arthritis, then my husband got dementia so that made the choice for us.

Life is not always fair. We moved to France 35 years ago,one of the reasons being my wife’s health. A good move despite not being aware of just how cold it can be. Our first winter it was down to-14 degrees and only about 6 years ago -17, which lasted about a week. Even so a good move, Chris

Seeing the photo of the toad reminded me of the night I let my chocolate lab in my London garden for a last sniff. I heard a kerfuffle and choking noise, Fred opened his mouth & out jumped a large toad. Poor Fred continued to cough and attempted spitting, the toad had obviously given off the toxic emissions from his skin into the mouth of my poor predator dog. He cried and carried on moaning through the night and oh my goodness what a horrible 'mess' I found in the early hours. Very unpleasant indeed and never to be repeated. I recall hearing boars blundering around French countryside on my lone walks, quite scary at the time. You never know how big they are or if they've got babies to protect when you can't see them. P

Poor dog! My old cat brought in a frog for supper. No! Not for him to eat! He put him down by his (empty) bowl and yowled until we put food in his bowl for his friend to share with him! The frog was totally unfazed, even though he had been carried by the cat so as just his long back legs were dangling out of the cat's mouth!! xx

Thank you. Back in the 70s and 80s, there were some real characters around, wo had seen far more in their lifetimes than many people do. When we talk about the "good old days", we wern`t wrong. I fear for our grandchildren`s future, with the world in absolute turmoil. It really is in a sorry state when we start to trust China more than the US. I can`t believe that Starmer "likes and trusts" trump. Personally i would trust him as far as I can spit. On that happy note, I`ll sign off and get on with proofreading a patent. In the last 10 days i`ve read a patent for a car headrest (pretty sure most cars already have them). I`ve read one for an aerodynamic tennis racket (no comment), but today`s is something unbelievable " a female urinal", nothing less! I`ll not upload any pictures, i`ll leave that to the imagination, Chris.

I`m glad I noticed the incoming mail, gave me something to laugh about. This patent really takes the biscuit. Bottoms, rear ends, squatting and not to mention the bottom`s rear end, at this time of day .......?

Your talking about mini- wire haired Dachshund reminded me of the one my childhood friend had. She was half Scottish, so we spent holidays in Scotland together. Sweetie Pie (I know!) would run off into the heather and jump up every now and again to check we were still there! It was funnier than it sounds now, one of those you had to be there moments!

Love your little toad and stories xx
