A short story and quandry as a result

We bought a caravan 6 years ago and our first long trip was down to Ampolla on the Med. Super friendly campsite across from the beach. Great. We then drove up to the Nort of Spain to Haro and parked the van in our friend`s garden. We left it there and daughter and family then went and stayed there for a week, visiting the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao as well as vinyards and old monastries in the area. We vollected the van end of August for my 75th birthday treat. I.e drive across northern Spain, through Madrid and with a 2 night stop on the way arrived at a campsite just South of Lisbon. Again facing the sea, glorious sunshine, fabulous.

when we were due to leave, my wife went to pat while I got the caravan closed up moved onto the road and hitched to the car ready to go. She came back, walked round the van to check windows were closed, lights worked and off we went.

Only a short drive through town before getting on the motorway and heading back to the Med coast. after 2 hours drive or so we pulled off the motorway and looked for somewhere to eat. Knowing that the dogs usually wake up once on small roads, I casually said "the dogs are quiet for once", my wife turned round and sharply replied "where are the dogs?"

Whilst getting the van ready to go I had tied them to a tree, and left them there at the campsite.

We stopped at the first restaurant and asked in my best yorkshire variety of Portugueses, which happens to be fine as most Portuguese, certainly in restaurants speak English, if we could leave the van wile we went back for the dogs. Menwhile my wife was frantically trying to fine the phone number for the campsite to make sure the dogs were OK. They were. In fact the owner had decided if we did not go back he would keep them.

We continued our holiday with only minor problems. Auto gearbox overheating and stopping. We`d done about 3 hours drive when temp was nearly 40 degrees, than turned off the main road and attemted a steep climb to the campsite. At which point the car simply said "Gearbox hot" and stopped. I opened the bonnet and stepped back while the hot air blasted out from around the engine. Thank fully after about 5 minutes the car restarted and we gingerly made our way onto the campsite. The rest of the holiday was without any furter problem. It was only a month later we got a love letter ftom Spain with a speeding ticket, that while towing the caravan!!

Our trip to Spain last June was ot of the same calibre. It rained down by the Med, we had a 2 metre long gash carved down the side of the caravan, punctured tyre, and a 10 hour drive home as the campsite where we wanted to stay was still flooded from earlier storms. 3 days later we both ad Covid.

In between our first adventure and this year we have had the pandemic. Result, my wife missed out on any special party for her 70th and we missed out on any party for our Golden Wedding.

So, the quandry is what to do this year? My wife will be 75 in August. We want to go away in may-June time, here in France. OK We have been invited to my niece`s 60th birtday bash in July, back in UK, expensive travelling, and we have my sister`s 90th birthday in October, again in UK.

What do we do? Forget the first birthday in July and simply go away oureselves, without the caravan this year and still go to UK in October. Any other suggestions would be appreaciated. Thank and have a good day everybody, Chris.

what an adventure you had! I spent my 70th birthday in May 2020, on the sofa with zoom to my family members around the UK and decorated cupcakes which my daughter had had sent to everyone.

I think it boils down to what your wife wants to do and how financially difficult it would be to go to the UK.

I think that having a nice holiday together without the caravan and then going to the UK in October is probably your inclination. Your wife’s niece will have lots of people at her big bash and your absence should not cause any unhappiness. As your sister is 90, a special effort to be with her could be lovely.

My sister got rid of her caravan this year after fifteen years of dragging one behind them and everything else that caravan holidays entail. She said to me ‘oh the joy of a lovely hotel bed and ensuite, meals put before us and no sorting out the caravan when we got home’,

Whatever you decide I hope that you have a good year.

We are relatively new to caravans and have to admit that remebering what to do and in which order not always easy. But, I do enjoy BBQ outside the caravan and we do enjoy meeting people from so many different countries. Our languages are strictly limited to French and English with a few polite words of German, Spanish and Portuguese. You can`t but try try to at least say please and thank you, good morning and whatever. We will go to Les Aillos near Toulouse again. In June we often see people that we have met before. They are eiter heading South to Spain, or on their way back home to Holland, Belgium, Germany, Sweden to name just a few.

My sister does not want a houseful as she had last year when it was my birthday, late October, so she has suggested a Beetle Drive. I will explain in another post if there are people around who have no idea what one is.

In the meantime, I`d better get some work done. Have a good day, Chris.

Omg! What a lot of (mis)adventures!I agree with Swizzy - a nice hol for you two and enjoy seeing yr sister for her 90th )). Could u have the June hol in caravan a bit nearer to home? U get to bbq & meet people, without the probs of excessively long drives + wear+tear on car.if weather's not the best,u can head home more easily and perhaps stop off somewhere on way back? X

Yes, we could stay closer to home. I`m not too woried about the car despite it being 15 years old. Mondeo with auto-box that pulls the big caravan easily. My wife says no more than 4 hours driving during the day. She is probably rigth, but I don`t wear a watch and do perhaps take advantage of her closing her eyes from time to time. I do admit that I no longer consider driving from Figeac to Sheffield in one day, as I have done in the past. I am more sensible than I used to be. If I rememer rightly, and I don`t know if the two are related, the last time I did the trip in one day, we had a fabulous evening until nearly midnight on the Sunday, when I had a TIA and ended up in hospital. Unable to drive fo ra month afterwards, our daughter flew to east Midlands where she was collected by my sister to drive us back home. what is life if you can`t have a bit of excitement eh? Now back to cleaning my office. Take care, have fun, Chris.

Have you considered a caravan holiday in the UK?

No!

Have you added up the cost of driving with caravan for at least 800 miles each way + cost of ferry?

Driving without the car is expensive enough, even with a car that returns nearly 50 mpg, without caravan. We can spend as much on tolls in France as we do on diesel. Thanks for the suggestion, but unless we were moving back to UK, not very likely, not on the cards. Chris.

Yes, tricky one! You're lucky to have family. I have no close family at all, bar one small family of lovely 2nd and 3rd cousins. For my 70th in Nov 2019, I treated myself to a lovely week of a group holiday for independent travellers in Italy earlier, in October, to get the sunny weather. Then got self to Royal Albert Hall for 60th anniversary of Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club. For my birthday itself, I took a group of ten good friends to a local Italian restaurant. And in the January, mega-treat for self was another group holiday with the same company to St Lucia. I made friends from both holidays with whom am still in touch, which prolongs the 'birthday glow'.

Arrived home end of January, and was so glad to have done all that, just in time for the Covid outbreak! My point is, sometimes several unusual (admittedly extravagant) but special treats around the time of a birthday can be really fulfilling and leave you with a wonderful feeling of well-being. However, ...

My 75th was two best friends bringing round cakes for a pleasant afternoon as my back problems prevented anything more ambitious. So another point is "Gather ye rosebuds while ye may ... "

Would love to know what a Beetle drive is, please! If you're near Toulouse anyway, you really must visit the nearby town where Helen Mirren did a film ... signing off now to check its name as can't guarantee won't lose this post while checking screen (!) ... and will get back with the name - you will love it ...

Name of the really fab charming old town near Toulouse is St-Antonin Noble Val, on the banks of the River Aveyron. I think the film was the Hundred Year Journey. But I will eat my hat if you don't visit and fall in love with the place! You absolutely can't be near Toulouse and not visit it! But I would say absolutely no repetition of over-long driving trips in the caravan. Do pace yourself v carefully so that it's really enjoyable. Listen to your wife! Buy a watch and wear it!! Agree with Swizzy re going to your sister's 90th as priority. Hope some of the suggestions people have posted will work for you.

Yes, we do know St Antonin as we regularly drive from Figeac where we live down to Toulouse for both eye and lung specialist. Dropdown trough Villefranche, Caylus toward Montauban where we pick up the motorway into Toulouse. Thank you for the advice, I`ll try to follow some of it, Chris.

i am gobsmacked you forgot those doggies! What a nightmare, so glad they were still safe. A less stressful holiday this year, without car and caravan worries!

What an interesting story of events. My eldest sister and her hubby had a caravan for years and travelled all over France with their grandkids and loved it. I had enough of motorway travels when living in Germany driving all the way down to Calais from the north for the ferry. I am sure no matter what you decide it will be enjoyable x
