I’m Home!

Last night at 8pm, 31 days after being admitted to hospital with sob and high temp I am finally home🥳

Turns out I had flu. I improved quickly with antivirals and antibiotics with some oxygen support. Unfortunately after 5 days I started feeling phenomenally unwell very quickly. I had pneumonia, 3rd time since April, but the worst I had ever felt. High doses of IV and oral antibiotics, needed much more oxygen and felt on a few occasions I was not getting better😞

The hospital staff were great, and slowly I was able to wean down from the oxygen but unfortunately not off it. This is not of course what I wanted and means that I now have oxygen at home. But the main thing I keep telling myself is I am home!!

Chest xray and scan shows my fibrosis has progressed further. So shoulders back, and get going with my new “normal “ Really looking forward to Christmas- with not a pressie bought- but who cares. I’m home 🥳👏👍🏻

Wishing everyone a Happy Christmas 😘

Oh, gosh. Poor you. So glad you are home in time for Christmas but I hope you will be able to rest as much as you need to. Pneumonia is a tough and slow recovery, as I am sure you know all too well. Don't set light to the pudding anywhere near your oxygen!

Welcome home! I know the feeling well. Just remember it takes a long time to recover from a serious illness and you’ll feel frustratingly weak! So be kind to yourself and don’t expect too much too soon. Baby steps x

Good you are home for xmas. It is hard accepting oxygen at home but you will realise its a life saver . It has prevented me from calling the paramedics many times. when I have an exasperation and my breathing gets worse I just up the oxygen until I feel better. Wishing you a merry Xmas and a happy and healthy 2025. xx

I feel as if I have failed somehow needing oxygen at home, stupid I know . I have always been such an active as possible person. I need to reset my mindset as to my new normal and go forward, not look backwards. Thank you for your practical advice. X

I know how you feel this was my worse nightmare. I'm now on oxygen 24/7 . I have severe COPD but was managing the breathlessness. Then was told I have Pulmonary Hypertension which was a shock. The treatment is oxygenI asked my Respiratory nurse how long I have to have the oxygen 24/7 and was told for the rest of my life, it really upset me. I still feel angry at times as it limits my life , but without it, I don't like the alternative .

There are other illnesses with far worse consequences so I try to be Positive and concentrate on what I can do not what I can't. It's hard as the canular across my face is annoying and to go out means I have to carry a heavy cylinder. Lots of adjustments but I'm still here and have my family around me.

I am 80yrs old and many don't get the privilege of reaching this age

Hopefully I can get a few more years in with the help of oxygen, so it really is a life saver

Have a lovely Xmas and remember you are not alone. Lots of love . Sheila xx

Gosh you’ve beat my record 21 days with sepsis and pneumonia! You’ve really had it rough though and that’s a toll on your lungs. So pleased you’re home for Christmas, stuff the presents, nothing like your own bed and a hot cuppa.

Merry Christmas

Take care

Wendy xx

I would have happily let you keep the record 😂 I think my lowest point was when one of the consultants came to me and asked what my thoughts were on resuscitation! I told him to go away and come back when I was feeling better and he had read my notes as it was already documented!

The family are all of the same opinion regarding presents, told me to wrap a packet of digestive biscuits if it made me feel better 😂 Have a good Christmas 😘

what an awful ordeal for and feeling worse to end up with pneumonia again!! That sounded frightening but…. Good old oxygen has come home with you and I was put on oxygen in August this year on exertion and tbh when I check my sats I use it so I don’t get another chest infection. Like everyone had said “ home in time for Christmas”. Breathe easy xxx

well doe for getting home before Christmas. I’ve still got presents to get and I haven’t written a card yet. I just had pneumonia too and I haven’t got the energy to do much. I’m doing what I can and what isn’t done is too bad. I could well have been in hospital a week or so ago. I could barely walk and I fell off the loo twice. I’m much better now but still lacking in strength.

You have a lovely Christmas and I’ll try to do the same.

Blyth1 profile image
Blyth1 in reply toMavary

So sorry to read you have also had pneumonia Mavary. Hope you start regaining your energy soon. As for cards, I have sent none, the husband sent the relatives one, everyone else nope. Presents only a couple I bought months ago and remembered they were in my cupboard ! The family will be together, and who knows I may get to lift a glass of something 🥂

Wishing you a lovely Christmas 🤶
