Hi good folks. I'm new to this and fairly ignorant. I hear people speak of damage infections can do to.lungs. I am battling bronchitis for two weeks now with intense coughing. Taking fluticasone propionate and salmeterol inhaler and zithromax antibiotic. I have mild emphesyma and asthma and will be seeing a pulmonologist for first time next month. My question is, is this infection actually causing permanent damage to my lungs? Do I have to worry about that whenever I get sick? Had covid 3 times. Still learning and this site seems so informative and supportive. Thank you.

Is this causing lung damage?
Hi, and welcome 👋 I’m not a medic but have always been told it’s only prolonged, severe infections which cause irreversible damage. Of course repeated infections aren’t good, because they cause inflammation, which will make you wheezy & can take weeks (if not months) to die down, but that’s not permanent. So I’d say you can stop worrying 😊
I can only speak from my own limited experience, but a couple of bad chest infections and 2 bouts of covid since my diagnosis do not seem to have affected my lungs at all. Hope and trust you'll be the same.
beyond me but seek an appointment with a consultant who is recognised for listening to his/ her patient as opposed to the type that just rabbit on with no regard to their patients input.
I believe that a long stint with a bug, Staphyllococcus Aureus, caused my bi-basal bronchiectasis. I also believe that a bout of pneumonia and pleurisy, may have caused my heart failure, which I now have.
I also believe the first problem was the fault of my surgery, for not referring me to the consultant at the hospital, much sooner. They were in disarray at the time.

Hi Patk1...yes, am doing better. Cough better just terrible fatigue and still have nausea. Left with pain from coughing so much. Finished antibiotics. Thank you for asking.
Yes - fatigue and nausea are part of it, I have bronchiectasis and asthma, only found out about the bronc in may after one long chest infection that lasted 5 months. At one point I had pain in my back from coughing and was virtually bedridden and found it hard to eat and drink. Antibiotics take a week + to work and I have never known anything like it before. Hope you get better soon..
Thank you for responding. That was some ordeal you went through!! A ctscan did indicate I had mild bronchioectasis and mild emphysema in addition to asthma but for the first time I'm seeing a pulmonologist next month. ER couldn't believe I'd never been assigned pulmonologist.Take good care of yourself.
