Hi Romolo, when Pete was started on pred for his sarcoidosis he was on 30mg which proved to be too much as he developed osteoporosis. Do speak with your doctor about how long you’re to stay on steroids and make sure you’re scanned for osteoporosis. Pete is now on 10mg daily. Not ideal but he can’t manage without them. Xx

I’ve learned that when we take steroids they should be reduced gradually when finishing never knew this

The tapering of steroids is usually only if you have had a longer course of 7 or more days. The gp should advise on any tapering regime. Short courses eg 5 days it’s normal just to stop.

Yes this is what thought however I’d taken them three times in four months and PR team told me should always taper

Hmm. I think the issue is so many courses in a relatively short time span. Obviously listen to your medics but usually you don’t need to taper after a short course.

That used to be the way I took them for asthma years ago, if I didnt peter out the dose Id be ill again afterwards. Now I'm told it's best to hit it hard with large dose throughout the ST course, I was a little wary but it works for me. x

I was started on IV Pred 100 mg then down to 60 mg. I was on 60 mg for about 6 months and slowly started reducing. As Sassy said, please speak to you doctor. They'll advise you on how long to stay on that dose and when to start tapering. The side effects can be awful when you're on for a while. I'm still taking Pred 19 months later but am hoping to be off by the end of the year 🤞🏼

I've been on 50 before. Only your doc knows what is right for your specific problem, but always reduce slowly when you come off . Good luck

Not if you're Chronic, some take it constantly

some need preds for life, but whatever dose if you have been on them for more than 3 weeks you need to taper them down when coming of them. This is to avoid going into adrenal shock which can result in total collapse and blue light ride to hospital. Tapering should be at 1mg a time ideally monitored by an endocrinologist for the last 7mg.

I've learned something, thankyou. I didnt realise it was adrenal shock?

I'm on 9mg perday and would love 20mg perday. They can mitigate that amount by calcium and other medicines 💊 that will help with the side effects
