Feel better soon Kiwiflyer and just to let you know we DIDN’T get the RSV vaccination yesterday. The surgery rang to say we didn’t qualify so it was cancelled. It seems 75-79 is being strictly adhered to. Xxx
Really sorry to hear that, Carole. It seems completely ridiculous, especially if you set the cost of the jab against that of a chest ward or, god forbid, ITU admission. My husband (78), no chest problems, is eligible, but I (72, 4 serious lung conditions & an immune deficiency) am not. Madness 🤷♀️
Yes I got an email offering the RSV and arranged with my gp on the same day....unheard of! The nurse said that the age group may increase later. She also said it is for 2 years but possibly for 5 years or even life! I am so grateful to have read about it here
Hi there sorry to hear you were not so good , every chest infection young or old can make your lungs less efficient . I had my RSV and she said that would cover me no need to have another. But guess that's because I am well on my way to 80. Hopefully the age factor will change by next year and more people can be protected that are sickness compromised, however if you had antibiotics your illness must have been bacterial not viral. Anyway hope you soon feel much better and your lung flare up caused by the infection gets better quick.
I’m glad you were able to have your RSV jab . It’s good that you won’t need another one.
I never really know whether my flare ups are bacterial or viral, I’m just told to start my ‘rescue ’ pack which consists of Clarithromycin (and steroids).
Sounds about average, unfortunately we can't miss some of these bugs unless we isolate like during the lock down. Hope you are beginning to feel a little better. Take care ,keep warm and pamper yourself.
Having Bronchiectasis with asthma, I get whatever vaccine I can get. Flu, shingles, RSV and Covid shots. Anything to keep my lungs as healthy as I can.
I’ve just come across this article, which answers a few questions. I’d say the reason for denying it is (a) cost - as suggested by Coughingalltheway above - and (b) lack of evidence of benefit in over 80s. Well - as the article states - yes there’s a lack of evidence, because over 80s are often excluded from clinical trials! I often check these out to see if there are any of interest to me, and they invariably have an 18-80 age eligibility range
I spoke to one of the doctors at my practice about getting the RSV VACCINE. She told me that despite my medical history of COPD and lung cancer, at 74 I’m a year too young so don’t fit the criteria. She did say if there was any vaccine left after fulfilling the eligible people I might be able to have it. I think it’s crazy as it should go by need as well as age. What do others think? By the way I won’t hold my breath (no pun intended) that I’ll end up getting it for quite some time.
