Wheezing after viral bronchitis

I had a bad attack of viral bronchitis last April and was hospitalised. After diagnosed and treated I was sent home with steroids and a blue inhaler. I recovered after 2 weeks and thought that was it. However I keep having repeated milder episodes every 2 or three weeks ever since. The wheezing is awful and the cough produces copious amounts of frothy white mucus which then can become yellow and thick. I had an xray and that was normal. Is this the pattern now with this condition or have I now got a chronic bronchitis? Also the wheezing is made worse when laying down or leaning my back against pillows etc which means I have to sit bolt upright or in a chair to sleep. Any advice on how to treat this would be great because I have had colds etc but nothing like this before and am not sure how to proceed. Thanks

Hi reinaway I've just found out I have bronchitis. I'm taking antibiotics for it. When I was struggling to breathe I knew I had to go to the hospital. I wasn't producing phlegm for months until I was on the antibiotics then it slowly was 😝gross. I have Copd so that is why it took me ages to get help. I thought it was that

You need antibiotics reinaway. I have to sit tight upright but also slowly recline until I can't breathe so up up I pop.

Hugs to you, I really hope you get some !!!!🤗

Thanks for the reply Dawn and it's awful when you feel you can't breathe isn't it. The doctor at the hospital did lots of tests and diagnosed it as accute viral bronchitis and said I needed steroids for that as it is not bacterial and anti biotics would not touch it. I was on them and he told me to stop and just take the steroids What I really want to know is how long the coughing will go on for and why it appears to go away and then come back. Just fed up of medical things as I have had a lot lately and thought I'd try on here. Thanks again anyway and best of luck with your problems. xx

Sometimes viral chest infections leave Airways sensitive for a while.ru using yr salbutamol inhaler when symptomatic? It's worth going back to gp, as there may still be inflammation going on.lots of us here sleep propped up, me on a pile of pillows to help with breathing probs.

Thanks for replying Patk these forums are so helpful aren't they. The AF forum has helped me so much over the past years and it looks like this one is going to do the same. I wondered if I should use the inhaler every time I have a bad session or not. It doesn't seem to help that much but I'll give it a try and see if it does. Thanks again.

Yes ths is a lovely forum.salbutamol is a " reliever" .use it as soon as feel wheezy, tight, coughing.make sure to breathe it in as deep as possible. Do u use an aerosure spacer xx

It's a horrible thing having to clear the mucus out but I have bronchiectasis not bronchitis and I use a device to clear it and its even worse when I have an infection otherwise if I don't clear it it reinfects and so a vicious cycle begins of antibiotics and steroids

That's interesting but not a very happy outcome to look forward to! Thanks for it though and I can see that I might have a long way to go yet.

My daughter suffered from this alot when little and nothing shifted it until she had a liquid antibiotic I think it was called Penbrytin. I wonder if yours has developed to an infection and now needs antibiotics. I would go back to your gp x

Thanks for the information and I guess I will have to see the doc again. I did suspect this might be the case.

Don't leave it too long , sounds like this needs treatment now.

Yellow mucus suggests there is something going on in your lungs which needs sorting. I was prescribed an AeroByka when I was coughing up loads of phlegm, a device to make your breathing more productive. It is possible some opportunist bacteria have sneaked into your lungs. You need to see your doctor again.

Thanks I'm thinking that way now as well.
