Chronic Bronchitis

Hello, quick question.

To be diagnosed with chronic bronchitis I constantly see that 1 of the criterias are:

"Cough with mucus production for 3 month for 2 consecutive years".

I don't get the 3 month part and was wondering if any of you good people could shed some light? Does this mean you have to have a productive cough for 3 consecutive months of a year or is it if you have a productive cough that accumulates to 3 month of the year? E.g Jan, Feb, March vs Jan, July, December.

I'm aware there is other criteria involved and is not solely on this.

Thanks

Lee

I think what they were getting at is during winter do you produce mucus for a few months when you get ill. Consecutively or otherwise I don’t think much matters - in reality most people with CB produce it all year around. You mention you havnt had a diagnosis? They were very reluctant to diagnose me also a couple of years ago. Unfortunately I’ve progressed a lot since my last infection.

Thanks for your reply.

I've been vigorously tested for around 5 years. In that time I've had 4 plethysmographs (lung function in a glass box). Although I show mild obstruction, I have no deterioration, with an fev1 of 94% but my fev1/fvc ratio is around 65% and I have large lung capacity for my demographic. Because of the lack of deterioration I was discharged from respiratory as 'atypical'. Assumed minor airway alteration due to a bad infection.

I almost never cough. I do have very minor phlegm in a morning but only occasionally like I can go a month or 2 with nothing, then I might have a week of this only in the morning. Hence me wonder if it was consecutive or accumulative months.

My biggest symptoms is an audible wheeze. Negative for asthma and don't fit the criteria for copd, not enough mucus/infection for bronchiectasis and not breathless for small airway disease. I'm a mystery.
