neither I nor hubby have put on weight with statins, been on it (20mg) for years. Think the statins are not guilty 😀
Hi - I have been on Atorvastatin 20 mg. for years with me they have caused no weight gain.
I think after just three weeks it would be hard to pinpoint the reason for you weight gain.
One thing if you are not eating more and or exersising less and - You continue to put on weight. I think a good idea would be to find out why.
I am not a doctor and can't advise, I think probably not statins to blame,
I take Atorvastatin and just can't put weight on, I don't think statins cause weight gain , well they haven't with me and I need to increase my weight a bit.
Like you I did find that I put on weight with Statins, I did some research and it appears they can be weight loss inhibitors so I just had to watch my diet. We are all different and medications can affect us all in different ways.
The best person to speak to is your pharmacist. They are the folk who have to know all about drugs they dispense, their contents, effects, side effects, interactions with other medications, etc.
Nowadays, they are also qualified to give advice and dispense some meds that on doctors could previously. There are SO many medications out there, and many keep changing. GPs are not pharmaceutically qualified, so a good friendly pharmacist is always the best start if you have concerns.
Statins “can” interfere with blood glucose levels, so if you are on any oral or inhaled steroids, this could be affecting weight gain. Pharmacist could advise better, and maybe do a spot check on your blood glucose levels.
My brother in law was put on Atorvastatin many years ago due to a heart attack, connected with hereditary cholesterol problems. He has had to watch what he eats now, has always taken exercise, but is generally more careful with what he eats. He has been monitoring his blood glucose levels with some gadget that he wears, so he knows what food or drinks can elevate his levels, though he still enjoys his naughty treats on top of the healthy stuff 👍
You don’t say if you’ve been prescribed this for heart issues related to respiratory or cholesterol, but none of us are qualified and can only give you our personal anecdotal advice.
Really hope you find a solution fast! We all need to know if symptoms are part of our condition or side effects from medications. Good luck and hope you get your answers very soon.
All best wishes 🙂
I have been on autorvastatin 20 mg for a year and a half, and have certainly not put on weight. In fact I’ve lost weight, purely due to me cutting out most fats, to help the reason for the statin.
I have been taking Atorvastatin 80mg for over two years following heart attack. My weight has fluctuated a bit in that time by a kilogram or two, but I can pin the weight gains on more chocolate and cheese! More exercise and less calories sees my weight reduce.
