Adult Whooping Cough longer term and associated symptoms.

Hi folks

I had whooping cough with it starting the beginning of April this year.

Symptoms were a dry cough, swollen pharynx and Larynx with my voice going many times. Coughing so much I would vomit multiple times and almost pass out with being so lightheaded during the coughing bouts.

Stridor with airways closing up waking me at night making that awful sound as I was gasping to get air in and out.

I saw the GP about this and I was given a nasal inhaler to help swelling in my throat, ha ha !

Saw another GP who I told that I suspected whooping cough due to my symptoms. We both agreed that nearly 4 weeks later antibiotics wouldn’t help if it was Pertussis, but I also had a mild chest infection by this time too.

Three weeks ago, my GP tested me for Pertussis and I had a call from the local hospital’s Infectious diseases department last week to say I had tested positive and wanted to know if I had been around pregnant ladies of babies etc.

I am still very occasionally having “the” cough and feeling light headed (perhaps one or maybe twice a day but much shorter duration), however, I wanted to find out (nothing on Google) if anyone had similar BUT with any other symptoms in these later stages?

I only ask as I have such low energy and feel rubbish and washed out. I can’t find anything about associated symptoms in adults post infection and wondered if rubbish and washed out were latter symptoms of this nasty bug as I didn’t feel awfully ill during its peak.

Please feel to list any symptoms you may have had or have on top of the main ones, it would certainly help me and perhaps others seeing as there is not too much out there other than the main symptoms.

Ironically, I was vaccinated for this as a child, but am 53 now. 🚹 (male).

Many thanks

Quintin

I had whooping cough when I was a child , many many years ago , but I still can remember the cough and the hoop sound

As an asthmatic , I have had a few attacks when stridor happens , horrid sound . My husband has too.

I can’t help you with your query , sorry , but ALUK has a helpline , open again tomorrow , and then next week , office hours .

They are very helpful , I have emailed or rung them before for advice .

Take care

asthmalungUK is the charity which runs this forum. Along with asthmaUK they have a dedicated helpline: 0300 222 5800 UK office hours. I'm sorry you've been having such a tough time and really hope you improve soon. I know it's not the same however, each time I had pneumonia it took 3 months to fully recover. Good luck. P

Thank you for your answers to date. Yes, I have asthma as well since a child but this wasn’t overly affected with whooping cough.
