23 Years male. I have breathing issue since I was a child. Recently I met a pulmonologist. He gave me PFT test along with Total IGE. My IGE level is 1300 but in PFT it showing I have mild Restrictive mild obstructive hyperresponsiveness. But the pulmonologist told me I have asthama. But I'm feeling very anxious because PFT is showing restrictive pattern. Can anyone please tell me what's wrong with me?

Another thing, night before the PFT I had severe breathing issue it stopped 30 minutes before the test, because they told me I can't use any inhaler before doing the test.

Hello. I'm afraid I am not a medic, so I do not understand the figures you have been given. i would suggest you call the very helpful helpline on 0300 222 5800.

the PFT lung function test, and IgE test just indicate your current lung performance and any infections. For a full diagnosis of lung issues further tests would be required, e.g. X-ray, CT scan and broncoscopy. There are numerous things that can influence the PFT test, asthma is one of them. If you are still fairly active and don’t get too breathless I wouldn’t worry too much, worrying about the numbers is never very good, just go with how you feel

Thanks for the reply man. But can you tell me is it possible to get inaccurate pft because i was having severe breathing issue. Breathing issue was started at 11PM and it was there all night and it stopped before 30 minutes of the test

I would imagine so, the PFT is only valid at the time it is done, ideally you should get a follow up PFT to see if your figures have changed. I have a home peak flow meter and can check my lung function, I know the figures go down if I have an infection and come back up again once the infection has cleared up

But despite it's showing there is a restrictive pattern my pulmonologist said i have asthma. Man is he lying to me? I'm so scared of death. I'm just 23😭

I'd focus on the MILD and that he has diagnosed asthma and u have inhalers to help.pls be aware that anxiety can trigger severe breathing difficulties. Perhaps read up on coping strategies to help when anxious eg put relaxing music on,close eyes, deep relaxing breaths, until it eases; distract yrself by doing whatever needs doing on farm; look at aluk website at " controlled pursed lips breathing" & practise frequently- it's relaxing, reduces anxiety and helps airflow if Yr struggling

Thanks a lot sir for your kind reply. Yes the pulmonologist gave me asthma diagnosis. But what about the restrictive pattern? It's just kicking my anxiety that my pft report says I've a restrictive pattern!

I have colleagues who have had asthma since childhood and they are now in their 60s and still going strong. The mild obstructive hyper responsiveness is an indicator that you have mild asthma. You are far too young to worry or think about death, stay off Dr Google unless you know exactly what you are looking at and can sort fact from fictional and take the advice of your doctors.

Mr, you are really very kind. Thank you so much for replying me several times. Actually I'm not that much worried about the term "asthma" , but I'm more worried and anxious about the term "mild restrictive", I don't know why my doctor ignored it. Anyways , thank you from all of my heart for giving a hope. Next time I visit doctor, I'll ask him why he ignored these things. Thank you once again. Wish you a healthy life ahead

I'm not sure he ignored it .breathing can be v restrictive/ obstructive with asthma.our Airways with asthma tend to be more sensitive to triggers= hyperreactive and inflammation does cause narrowing of Airways = asthma which is obstructive/ restrictive, usually relieved with blue salbutamol inhaler.the steroid inhaler aims to reduce+ control inflammation.

Currently I'm using a inhaler on daily basis. The doctor also gave me a rescue inhaler two months ago. But fortunately to this day, i didn't use that

I'd focus on that - if Yr Airways were restricted,u would need to use Yr reliever.yr asthma is obviously well controlled

Sir i am not trying to be rude, just questioning out of anxiety, do people with COPD need their rescue inhaler , even when they are on a maintenance inhaler?

Everyone's different but yes, many do as many, not all, asthmatics do.its gd that Yr asthma is well controlled now

I even don't know if it's asthma or not. As the PFT report says, I'm freaking out it can be COPD or more deadly.disease like interstitial lung disease. I'm feeling very sad that my pulmo should've give me a HRCT or atleast a xray to see if there is anything more severe. It's quite depressing that I'm unclear what is my actual diagnosis. Anyways, I'm wishing you a great health sir. I asked too many qus. And I'll probably continue asking😂😂. Sorry for the inconvenience
