I am due to have a colonoscopy.... but three attempts previously were failures. This time I am to be sedated with Propofol. Which I am told is quite strong. Obviously, the consultant and his anaesthetist are are aware of my lung problems. But I am aware of just how painful the last three attempts were! I really dont want to be going through that again. Has anyone had a colonoscopy with Propofol and did it affect your breathing?
I have extensive bronch. I had 3 endoscopies ( camera down) and one colonoscopy. All with heavy sedation. I don't know which drug they used. My breathing was fine for all three. There is no way that I could have managed any of them without that sedation.
Thank you Swizzy.... I did have sedation for the three previous, but obviously not enough, as one was particularly awful.. So glad your experiences were positive. I hope mine will be too x

I had 3 colonoscopy’s one with sedation I could talk to the doctor, the next also with sedation but I was unaware of everything fast asleep. Might b an idea for you. BERNARDINE
I've had full colonoscopy with no sedation at all,despite numerous problems.the secret is to use controlled pursed lips breathing technique ( see aluk website).u concentrate on breathing+ let dr do what needs to be done xx

It wasn't easy as due to major abdominal past surgeries, I've bad adhesions causing loops in bowel.im 1st person they ever had who managed the full colonoscopy,with h/o specific surgeries.bresthing is key xx

I had an epidural for a Cystoscopy? - It was total pain free and COPD/ASTHMA friendly. It's worth asking.

I had two failed colonoscopy over few years because bowel is tortuous and stuck to hysterectomy scar. They now do virtual ct colonoscopies for me
That sounds pretty similar to my problem. Only thing is I have had a virtual CT and it shows I have very large polyps which have a 1 in 4 chance of being cancerous. So I have no where else to go to save Colonoscopy, which as I said I am fearful of.
"very large polyps" My friend had these. He had a colonoscopy and they took the polyps - That was the end of his cancer worry. Whatever the method you would ease your mind when the cancer chance had gone. Ask for all the prodedures, including the epidural I mentioned before - Good luck I hope you get sorted soon.
I’ve had colonoscopies with sedation but was awake through the process. I am a restless person so I wouldn’t want to move during the process. I have bronchiectasis and asthma. Not sure which drug I was given. X
I had a colonoscopy with sedation earlier this year. I'm not sure which one but I was awake and aware but not in any discomfort. I'm on oxygen and my breathing was fine both during and after the procedure. They keep a very close eye on you.

I have had endoscopies etc with sedation. Marvellous didn’t feel or remember a thing.
Modern sedation is so good these days. Hope all goes well for you.

We had a day out yesterday as my wife had an appointment with the anesthatist prior to Colonoscopy at the end of the month. No idea what product they intend to use, but she does have a prescription for physio every day for 5 days before and 3 days after the intervention. All three doctors, gastro, lungs, and anasthetic have consulted to decide on how best to care for her breathing. Worth the 200 mile round trip to the hospital. Have a good day everybody, Chris.
I had one without sedation and that was enough. I am sure you will be fine, they do this day in day out so know what they are doing. I wish you well and hope you don't remember anything x
Many different procedures over last 26 years what I find helps me is , pinch index fingers and thumbs together and concentrate on that. I know it sounds simple but it works if you concentrate on the feeling , it's an acupuncture point
I had sedation for my last one and the surgeon topped up a couple of times as soon as he saw I was aware of what he was doing. All went well. Compared to an earlier one, this was a real success

Best wishes. I hope all goes painlessly. I've had 2, pre my bronch diagnosis. The 2nd time I was mildly sedated and slept through a lot of it. They removed 5 polyps. My daughter stayed awake watching the procedure on the monitor by the bed- braver (or madder) than me. Neither of us experienced anything worse than mild discomfort.
I have had 2 colonoscopies and each time small polyps were removed. The first was done privately without sedation and the second on the NHS with sedation. Both were equally painful. I am nearly 74 and have decided to have no more. If you have a CT scan and it reveals a problem, are you prepared to have invasive treatment afterwards? I would not be and that is why I have also declined a FIT test when one was last offered to me recently. Also, apart from pain, do recognise that a colonoscopy does have itself risks attaching to it
