It reacts with prednisolone.

Hi Jaybird19 . I did not know that liquorise reacted with prednisolone but I do know that it can raise blood pressure and people that have high blood pressure or a heart problem should avoid liquorice. This applies to my husband. When I was pregnant with my first child....a long time ago....I actually craved liquorice. As a result my iron count was that high the midwife used to say I was expecting a robot.😂🦋🦋

It was on a NHS site that i first saw it. But does it apply to lesser steroids as well. ? always thought iron was good for you !

I honestly don't know whether liquorice effects any leval of steroids Jaybird19 . Sorry I can't help with that.As regards my high iron levels when I was pregnant I think yes it was a good thing. It was just that the midwife asked what I was eating to get it that high when pregnant. 😂🦋🦋

What other fruits Ern, my iron is low at the moment.

I can't have Grapefruit and some citrus fruits because of heart medication interactions - I take Iron for low iron, you can get iron from GP or you can buy it, I get 20 You0mg from GP - You can buy iron from chemist or even amazon for not much. Really low iron should be checked......

I have seen something about liquorice and blood pressure and certain medications but can't remember what as I'm not fussed on it anyway. But look it up on Google as that's where I saw it 😉

Oh dear, I have liquorice teabags, I cant remember why though 🤪 only that it was something to do with lungs

I have started drinking an Indian tea from teabags that contain liquorice. It does have other ingredients in it and is said to be a bit of an ‘elixir of life’ style tea. Good for throat conditions plus colds and flu. . I have raised blood pressure but I doubt the amount in one teabag a day is enough to be concerned about. I do intend to check though to be in the safe side.

If you read the NHS website you would never consume liquorice, however it really depends on what type and if it includes certain ingredients. Might be worth checking the ingredients and importantly the amount you are consuming and if you have any side effects:

The NHS state: Eating more than 57g (2 ounces) of black liquorice a day for at least 2 weeks could lead to potentially serious health problems, such as an increase in blood pressure and an irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia). But do not mention what type of liquorice and the ingredients. Read on to find out more...

Licorice which contains glycyrrhizin may cause serious side effects. Too much glycyrrhizin causes a condition called pseudoaldosteronism, which can cause a person to become overly sensitive to a hormone in the adrenal cortex. This condition can lead to headaches, fatigue, high blood pressure, and even heart attacks.

The following article, albeit not a British article, provides lots of information about ingredients in liquorice, whether natural or alternative, the benefits and side effects, as well as drug interactions. Its worth noting here that many USA drugs have alternative names, sometimes our packaging state alternative names such as Prednisone can be known as Brand names: Deltacortril, Deltastab, Dilacort, Pevanti. The US and Canada etc can be different:

I love soft black liquorice but have to say I am now going to reduce my consumption and frequency as an aid to constipation...

I have one cup of licorice tea per day for digestion issues. I never have more than one cup a day, and I feel fairly safe because my blood pressure is always at the low end of normal. As with most things, I think licorice is fine in small quantities for the majority of people, but it's definitely worth keeping an eye on and reducing your intake if you're worried.

Having low adrenals I read it was good for that and mid afternoon it did seem to give me a boost but then I started to get migraines so I've stopped eating it on a regular basis for now.

Licorice leeches potassium out of your system, which can interfere with the balance of sodium/potassium/magnesium in the blood stream, hence the problem with blood pressure. Eat in moderation, and make sure you have plenty of potassium-containing foods and drinks like vegetables, fruit and coffee.

I used to drink peppermint and licorice tea a lot, but had to limit myself to a maximum of three mugs a day. I also love the licorice chews often called 'Spanish' - they're great for helping to shift constipation.

Herbalists seem to find a lot of uses for liquorice in small quantities. I don't think a few Bertie Bassets will harm anyone whose not on preds. But it sounds as if you will have to be very abstemious and ration yourself severely, Jaybird. 😢😢😢Perhaps toffees contains less liquorice than Bassets. xxx

Hi Jaybird - I too love liquorice . My son {doctor} told me it's ok to eat it in small amounts - a sweet every so often and not daily -however it does affect potassium levels in the body which can affect the regulation of heart rhythms and too much can cause a heart attack. I'm not sure about its effect on preds. As I'm inclined to eat a whole packet in one or two goes , I've stopped buying them x

I love liquorice Jaybird but read a while ago that it is not good to eat everyday. I cant remembeŕ all the problems associated with this but do have high blood pressure and a lack of potassium so only have one a few times a week but could happily eat the packet x

hi there, how does the liquorice react with the prednisolone?

It does raise your blood pressure, but you would need to ask your gp about the quantities you need to ingest, before it becomes a problem!

Take good care x

What a timely post for me. Just last weekend I ate quite a bit of Good and Plenty black licorice candy and thought nothing of it. I’m on many cardiac meds. I was having horrible palpitations and SOB. Could not think of anything I had done or ate differently. Then it occurred to me about licorice. Stopped eating it and the next day totally back to normal.

Seems no steroid is good with Liquorice

!Corticosteroids. Licorice may increase the effects of corticosteroid medications. Talk to your doctor before using licorice with any corticosteroids.!

Thanks to everyone who aswered post . I do not overdo it but is difficult to stop at one ! I will have to hide them and ration myself. I remember that my dad used to make liquorice tea at one time.

☹️ I eat a lot of licorice. Maybe I should eat less of it. In Scandinavia they consume masses of the stuff.

a lot of it is very salty which took me by surprise the first time! Personally I don’t like the salty licorice. It does make it even more of an interesting situation concerning the blood pressure! ⚫️◼️◾️
