Continuous congestion

I have COPD and seen my doctor due to chest congestion I cant get rid of. (2 months). I am not particularly ill but cough especially at night and am wheezing more. Chest Xray is clear, sputum clear and doc wont prescribe steroids. Just told me to take the blue inhaler twice a day, which I do, but still have congestion. Should I ask for a CT scan of my lungs?

I'd read up on lung clearance techniques incl active cycle of breathing + postural drainage + do in morn n b4 bed,in between if u need.once yr having dedicated sessions ,u may find it improves.if it's too thick, ask dr for carbocysteine, which thins it,making it easier to get up. I was told to use salbutamol b4 sessions to help dilate airways which shld make it easier to come up too.its also worth asking for referral to pulmonary rehab - they'll help to educate u 're condition + its an exercise regime too x

Hi Music. I have copd and it never really bothered me except for a bit of a cough in a morning. Last November I got a cold which gave me a chest infection and I am still coughing especially bad in a morning but at other times during the day. I have had my inhaler changed. I had 3 lots of antibiotics and steroids during December/January. I use my rescue inhaler but it does nothing. I am not really breathless at all. I know how you feel , it just doesnt go away no matter what you do. If I were you I would ask for a ct scan. If you find anything that helps please let me know. Drink plenty of fluids and all the things we are advised to do and I hope it works for you. Keep smiling x

Oh it’s a pain isn’t it ? Sounds like you are doing all the right things though and Patk1 has offered brilliant advice. A good amount of clear fluids through the day helps too.

A prescription of Roflumilast really helped reduced the amount of mucous I produce and I cough a lot less now. Depending on where you are in your COPD journey then you could ask for a trial of it. It is available for severe COPD and only available from a consultant ( it is on the Amber list )

Wishing you well.

Hi Musicqueen I use a salt pipe for 10 minutes before doing postural drainage exercise. It really helps me. When I'm really chesty I do this at least 3times a day.
