Prednisolone Belly

Good afternoon everyone,

I am 56 years of age and I have been on and off Prednisolone the majority of my life. I understand its a double edged sword as it has kept me alive but on the downside it has left me over the last 10 years with a large pot belly, I only weigh 10 stone, yet I look as though I am 9 months pregnant and ready to have a baby so I try to wear large tops and t shirts to make this less noticable.

Does anyone else suffer with this side effect?

Kind regards

Joe Rogan x

Yes, thanks to prednisone I’m barrel-shaped πŸ™ I hate it. Once you wean down, the β€œmoon face” disappears but the solid mass around the torso never does. I used to have a nice trim waist but sadly no more. At least you don’t have to worry about getting bras to fit πŸ˜‰

Hi Joe. Yes!! I have been on Pred continuosly for about ten years give or take. It causes fluid retention and increases appetite. It can also notorious for redistributing fat to your face and belly area. It's awful. Predisone are indeed the devil's tick-tacs. I hate having to take them but there we are. 😈

I just hate it, especially when you catch your reflection in shop windows. As a tall woman my biggest problem is getting tights, leggings and elasticated waist trousers to not roll over at the top. I’m currently investigating a company called Snag Tights as they offer lots of different styles and fits. It’s taken me years of trying different clothes styles to minimise the pot belly. I use make up and think about my hairstyle to help with moon face. So reassuring to share our experiences on this site. x

I’m a shortie but have problems with tights, I have tried snag tights and am happy to say that they do stay put and I don’t look like Nora Batty within minutes of putting them on. They are also very comfortable to wear.

Hello again, which bloating tablets are you referring to? Please share your information.

What are bloating tablets? Are you talking about Furosemide to treat edema? Furosemide is not prescribed unless totally necessary because of the many potential side effects especially to the liver and kidneys and it doesn't stop the weight gain in the abdomen and back. I would be cautious when giving advise about medication, and if you do please ask the person you are advising to talk to their doctor about it.

Best wishes. πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘‹

Does anyone know if steroid creams and inhalers have the same effect? Or is my pot belly simply caused by food?

I have nothing and no one to blame except my own greed! πŸ˜†

At least I have my husband to blame. I have to cook a lot to satisfy him, then I can't let it go to waste.πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‹

I was wondering the same I’ve recently been changed to Trimbow , I was assured there were no more steroids in than my previous one…but I’ve noticed my stomach started swelling and more heartburn and indigestion over the last couple of months ….. I’m going to ask to go back on Duoresp spiromax I didn’t have this trouble nowhere near as bad then. X

Oh yes, definitely, but with me, the pot belly is only part of it.. Dont forget the moon face & Buffalo hump at back of neck!!

People can spot us a mile off, but its a small price to pay for actually being alive. I too have been on steroids for 12 years, often high dose too but theyve been an absolute life saver to me. If i hadnt had them id be long gone..

A small price to pay!
