Smart Watch

Hi, I am looking into buying one of those watches where you can monitor your BP, heart rate and afib. There are so many makes and models out there and one does not quite know which one to pick. Is there anyone out there who uses such a device and advise which one is good. Also I would like to know how accurate it is. I don't need one all singing and dancing with phone calls etc. Most important for me, that it does what it says on the tin. Many thanks for your time.

Hi, I have an Apple Watch and Kardia. They both work well and are accurate but don’t give a blood pressure reading. I have a monitor for that. My watch is almost a year old and I believe there’s a lot more these devices can do now. Do some research and good luck. Xxxx

Take a look at Fitbits, there are several types. Mine is a Charge 5, it does info about activity, heart rate, how much sleep you are getting, oxygen sats ( its a reading only during the night) reminds you to move if been sitting too long, steps, and also can do an ECG over 30 seconds. It does a few other things too which i dont use. It doesnt do your BP but you can buy those seperately, and you can also buy a pulse oximeter to do your sats. i got mine from Amazon. I bought these to keep tabs on my health at home as it is so difficult to get seen at the surgery these days.

Hi,

Frankly I tried some of them and ALL gave results different from those given in any hospital..

therefore they can be good as an indication, but they are not precise so better avoid hopes or panic. .

After all if they are not used in the hospitals there is a reason .

The only device I found very precise is the good old oxymeter and the blood pressure monitor with arm cuff.

Best luck

Hi Pazquino, you have got a good point. I only wanted it when I am on holiday. I have a BP monitor too but not handy when you are out and about. Thanks.

My only info: my neighbor’s Apple Watch woke her up with an alarm when her heart rate got extremely low while sleeping. Her cardiologist confirmed it with a wearable monitor. He stopped her beta blocker meds that she’s been on for years and she’s fine now. Of course now I want one of these watches too.

Hi SusanEleven, this info is so interesting and has been a life changer for your neighbour. I will consider it. The onlyvthing, I don't think an Apple watch will be compatibke with either a smart phone or Android. Thanks for the info.

Hi, the Apple Watch is compatible and is linked to your Apple iPhone. For example, if you exercise, the data collected will be available on your phone. You can set your targets and it will tell you what you have achieved. The other useful feature is the Emergency SOS. You can call this anytime you need it. If you have a hard fall it will detect and alert you for a response. If you have been immobile for a minute it will automatically call the emergency services and give your location.

It does not measure blood pressure on its own at the moment because it requires an additional equipment. Apple is, however, looking at the technology for future possibilities.
