Hi guys....a recent CT scan showed some pleural effusion but nothing else...no nodes, growths or nodules, and a blood test showed no heart failure.I have to have the fluid removed on Monday and I'm bricking it already. I don't make a very good patient; former nurse; and I'm a wuss when it comes to pain. Can anyone put my mind at rest? Please? Was it painful, were you sedated? How long did it take you to recover? I'm soooo damn nervous....

I had it done with a needle in 2015. I had a local anaesthetic and it wasn't painful.

Hi - I have not had this done, I was offered sedation many times and always refused.

My point is, I can't see them letting you suffer, you will have a local and there should not be any pain. I had a spinal when I had my hernia done, just a local when I had my wisdom teeth pulled, what a job that was, but I felt nothing.

Try not to worry, will be over with before you know it,

i had it done and was a bit apprehensive. depending how much fluid is there depends which process is done. Mine was by needle guided by scan it was done on a respiratory ward, which hopefully most are now. it was pretty painless proceedure and didnt take very long at all.

Hi Sue, I had a needle biopsy into a lung, I was given a local anaesthetic before the procedure. It was not painful, just felt pushing on my back I was not offered any sedation as the doctor said it wasn’t needed as I had the local anaesthetic. I was able to leave the hospital less than an hour afterwards without the issues that you get when sedated

Hi Sue,

I had a thoracentesis in March for pleural effusion (375 ml). With local anesthetic, i could barely feel the pressure of the needle, no sharp pain at all. My main concern was just trying not to move, which was actually not dificult when the time came. I think it was just a few minutes.

I hope it goes (or went) well!

I had it done 3 times, less than 3 weeks apart. No pain at all. Drove myself home immediately after.
